: When can I contact a solicitor?
You should be able to ring a solicitor as soon as you've been arrested. Once at the police station it is one of the first things you should do, for two reasons:
1. To have someone know where you are
2. To show the cops you are not going to be a soft target; they may back off a bit
It is advisable to avoid using the duty solicitor as they are often either crap or hand in glove with the cops. It's worth finding the number of a good solicitor in your area and memorising it. The police are wary of decent solicitors. Also, avoid telling your solicitor exactly what happened; this can be sorted out later. For the time being, tell them you are refusing to speak. Your solicitor can come into the police station while the police interview you: you should refuse to be interviewed unless your solicitor is present.
should you decide not to contact a solicitor right away and the cops offer you a phone call, it's better to answer "not at thisx time' as opposed to a fglat 'no'. keep the option open.
also, should you think that you are going into an arrestable situation, tis a good idea to have a group member who isnt going to be arrested liasing with the police. they can find out which station you are going to, organise a lawyer for you and wait in the reception area with a hug ready for you when you get out (and some food!!!
.
the most important thing about being arrested is knowing what you have to tell them, and answering no comment to the rest of their q's. play i spy with them instead - it'll help to pass the time while they are doing the paperwork, which takes a long time
To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and to endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.
