Road to Perdition is a pretty good movie, but it doesn't have a lot to do with real gangsters persay. It's more of a hollywood blockbuster story.

I have recently been reading up on Al Capone, the 1920s, immigration during the period, prohibition and the mafia in general, and am curious as to which films set in the period are worthwhile.
Ignoring the painfully obvious gangster films (Godfather and Scarface come to mind), which are some of the better ones?
Is Road to Perdition any good? How about The Untouchables?
If any fans of the genre could help, that'd be great.

Goodfellas is not called gretfellas for a reason... it's only good.
I think that Donnie Brasco is pretty good, I had another good one but can't remember, oh well, I'll just quote someone when they say it and call them a thieving bastard.

Don't you be blasphemin' in here.
Goodfellas is great. The movie was taken from a book written by the person depicted by Ray Liotta's character, Henry Hill. It was a fairly true/accurate account of what actually happened to a New York "syndicate". Naturally, it was fairly "Hollywooded" up for the movies, but still one of the best "Mob" movies.
Some great performances by DeNiro, Pesci, Liotta, Servino etc...
Verily poor as we are in democracy, how can we give of it to the world? A democracy conceived in the military servitude of the masses, in their economic enslavement, and nurtured in their tears and blood, is not democracy at all

I have to agree with Disgustipated that Goodfellas is a great movie and at some levels exceeds other mafia epics such as The Godfather Saga story, pick up the new DVD if you can it has a commentary track with the real Henry Hill
Mean Streets is another good crime movie from Scorsese
if you want good crime books check out anything by Elmore Leonard.
if you are looking for more modern crime movies try Tarantinos first 3 movies
A Bronx Tale
awesome flick. De Niro actually plays a "good" guy

It takes courage to stand up for what you know is right, but it takes more courage to be the only one standing.
I'm in agreement with Disgustapated and Methaddict, Goodfellas is amazing.
Casino is really fucking good, Deniro, Pesci, you know the deal. Watch it NOW.
O.K, these ones down here aren't Italian mob movies, but they're movies about crime and gangster type shit. If you like mob movies you'll like these.
Pulp Fiction
Jackie Brown
Reservoir Dogs.
Gangs of New York
Blow
Boondock Saints (which I thought was fucking horrible, but alot of people liked)
Casino, The Untouchables and A Bronx Tale are really good.
American Me is also a classic. It's about the Mexican mafia.
I heard that they're going to make a Godfather part IV. Has anyone else heard anything about it?

If you like mob movies you'll love "Hoodlum"
Two good movies about gangsterism in general are:
Gangster #1. It tries to portray(and does a good job as far as I'm concerned) the ugliness that is needed in a person to go far in that lifestyle.
Mean Streets. A rather bizarre movie that tries to portray the clumbsiness of lower level gangsters in 60's New York.
Tarrantino's movies are just good movies in general, I wouldn't nessesarilly place them strictly in the gangster category.
Edit: oh yeah! I almost forgot "Bugsy" is an awesome movie and rather true to reality.

Boondock Saints -- awful. The accents come and go, it's completely without merit.
Goodfellas is great. I heard the novelisation of Casino was beter than the movie and based on real events.

"State of Grace" is really good. It's not set in the '20s, but worth seeing none the less. It deals with the Irish mafia in New York.
Oglach: I didn't think there were supposed to be accents in Boondock Saints, other than Boston Southie. I could be wrong, though.

untouchables is an amazing movie
Goodfellas is fantastic but there are some really good brit gangster films out there too like lock stock or snatch they stand up to the hollywood films any day of the week. There smarter films than many of the US mob movies and they have great plots.

They were supposed to be Irish accents, it's a terrible film. I heard it was good and purchased it on sale, but sadly it was crap!

I had all my frinds telling me to see it and being sure that I would love it. After watching it, I was insulted. :P
