Apparently, there are already a few of these machines in bars in Miami and Ft. Lauderdale. If you drink, would you use this device?

Alcohol Inhaling Machine Goes on Display
    By MADISON J. GRAY

NEW YORK (AP) - A machine that lets drinkers inhale shots of alcohol went on display Friday night, even as one local lawmaker warned the device was ``a disaster waiting to happen.''

The Alcohol Without Liquid vaporizer mixes the alcohol with pressurized oxygen. Makers say it takes about 20 minutes to breathe in one shot, giving drinkers the effect of alcohol without the drunkenness, or hangover.

Democratic state Sen. Carl Kruger pledged to introduce legislation to ban its use, calling the inhaler, manufactured in England and distributed domestically by North Carolina-based Spirit Partners, a ``new form of pipe smoking'' and saying it could encourage underage drinking and drunken driving.

Attorney General Eliot Spitzer's office said the issue had been referred to the State Liquor Authority, and declined to comment. A message left with the agency was not immediately returned.

``It becomes a whole enforcement issue,'' Kruger said. ``The way we test alcohol levels will be skewed and so will all the direction we've taken in this state to lower blood alcohol levels.''

Westchester County Executive Andrew Spano said he also feared the machine would attract underage drinkers.

The machine went on display for a sneak peak at the bar Trust, in Manhattan. But bar and lounge owners in New York may be wary, said Bob Zuckerman, executive director of the New York Nightlife Association.

``We don't know if this device is legal and in addition we don't know if it is safe,'' Zuckerman said. ``Our members and most bar owners are responsible and I'm sure they'll tread very carefully before putting a device such as this in their establishments.''

A manager who answered the phone at Trust said it's too early to predict the effect of the new machine. The manager, who would identify himself only as Marty, said the bar hasn't purchased the device, and that Trust drinkers would ``be responsible, no matter how they ingest their substances.''

That is strange man. So its only benefits are you don't get a hangover? If people don't want a hangover then they should just take those pills before they drink or not drink at all. And would people be using the same machine? Eww, sounds like one more way to get a nasty mouth disease.

That Carl Kruger is an idiot. Could it really be a new form of pipe smoking? But damn if you're straight up breathing alcohol it'll get you fucked up quick. Straight to your brain man.

This machine sounds like it takes all the fun out of drinking so what's the point? But if I ever got my hands one one I'd try it just because you gotta try everything at least once. But then I guess it would be promoting underage drinking. Oh well.

    Mouth disease

I saw it on the tv news. It looked like everyone had their own personal inhaler which looked like a mini keg with a tap and tube. you suck the alcohol vapor from the tube.

I remember something like this in a Clockwork Orange or a Brave New World, maybe.

I agree with this guy, I don't think the result would be too pleasant if you decided to light a ciggie while you're getting drunk on gases.

Good point, Ian. However, I doubt the public official even thought about that possibility. If I hear of some dumb ass exploding his face with one of these, I am going to laugh. You'd hope that the designer of this equipment saw this as a possibility and added enough inert gases to lower concentrations of combustible gases to the point where ignition becomes an impossibility. Somehow I doubt it though. I'll definitely keep my ears open for such a disaster.

I didn't so much like the latter part of the book, which is more like all preachy talking than fighting and the old in-out. I liked the parts where these old yahoodies tolchock each other and then drink their Hebrew vino, and getting into the bed with their wives' handmaidens. That kept me going."

i heard something in the news about this type of machine. however i heard it got you more drunk more quickly, but you didn't get a hangover. i also heard that the disaster waiting to happen was to do with drink driving. apparently this device alters the way we ingest the alcohol. instead of it goin to the stomach then the blood etc, it goes straight to the brain. scientists fear this could cause brain damage with prolonged/frequent use, but more worrying is the fact that it doesnt get into the blood for much longer than normal drinking. this means that people can be feeling very drunk but still 'legally' drive due to the fact that they would pass a breathalyser or blood test. however their driving standard would be just as bad if not worse than someone who had drunk normally. so crashes are much more likely.

having said all this, since i dont drive, and love drinking, i would definitely give it a go to see what it's like. you've got to try everything once... except for some things... lol

I was about to start this topic myself. Check out the article on the msn homepage. I normally try and critically assess one article every couple of days. The do seem to take a fair puritanical aproach to these things but some of it does make sense. For example the low-cal and no hangover claims are supposedly bullshit.

Anyway there is no point in paraphrasing the claims on the site, but the article is interesting if not filled with a few holes.

How will this affect you lungs? You can use 96% to sterilize things and even remove old paint, this cannot be good for it.

surely the low calorie claim is when compared to drinks such as lager and beer? surely since it wont have the yeast etc, and you are simply inhaling and exhaling a gas, and the only part entering your system is alcohol, there will be much fewer calories than drinking other alcoholic drinks?

Apparently this was compared to spirits such as vodka, they said that yeast based drinks will always have high calorie but they could reduce those of spirits. Although on the site I saw at least, they claimed that the company was wrong because the calories are supposedly mostly in the ethanol.
