People use one side of their brain, right or left, and this dictates how creative, etc. we are. However, is it possible to use both sides of the brain?

Is it possible that people's political leanings could be a result of which side of their brain they use more?

I've heard that as a hypothesis, but then one must ask: what if one utilises both sides of the brain? Would one be a rightist AND a leftist?

Maybe they'd be an independent. Or maybe they'd just be apathetic.

I think you mean by this question whether it is possible to develop the "weaker" side of the brain, since if we did not use both sides of the brain we would not function as human beings (whether the corpus callosum is severed or not).

I know that the aged do crosswords and other such exercises to delay the deterioration of the brain. I do not know for sure (perhaps someone else would know), but I would hazard a guess that you can strengthen one side of the brain by undertaking stimulating exercises that correspond with the processes it handles, when younger (ie. reading will strengthen or develop a certain side of the brain).

Yes i was serious. No, im not saying that if you think right brained you will be right wing. But what im saying is that is there a certain part of the brain that determines your concept of reality and thus does it dictate the way you think? So what im saying is, if you took a bunch of right wingers, and a bunch of left wingers, and scanned there brains, would you find that there are certain patterns or certain areas in the brain are used and what not.

The phenomenon we are discussing here is called the lateralization of cortical functioning. As everyone should know, we use both cerebral hemispheres of our brains. The two hemispheres each have some functions that are not shared by the other. One hemisphere will dominate when a person performs a specific task, for instance playing a videogame, or targeting an Iraqi insurgent. Cerebral dominance describes which hemisphere is dominant in a persons language processing. About 90% of people are so called left brained, where the left brain controls language abilities, and logical processes. While the right brain controls things like intuition, and musical ability. In 10% of the population the roles are reversed or the person is "whole-brained". Being "whole-brained" can be beneficial in some cases, while often times it can result in learning disorders like dyslexia. In addition, there is a large body of evidence to support the notion that brain dominance determines handedness. Left-brained people are generally right handed, and visa versa.

In teaching, people use ideas brought about by the discovery of cerebral dominance to describe people's learning styles or traits. Artistic, pie in the sky types are generally termed right brained, while left brained people are more science and math oriented. Many people have devoted their lifes to developing teaching styles that will grab both types and foster more of a "whole-brained" approach.

Comrade Blackberry is absolutely right in his thinking. Bravo. Obviously he knows something of the matter. It is possible to strengthen the weaker side of the brain through exercise, and many elderly people at risk for alzheimer's disease are given tasks like cross word puzzles to prevent brain erosion. Although I have met many people who enjoy crossword puzzles for the sake of fun, myself included.

Next time we should tackle the myth that we only use 10% of our brains.

Here is kind of a cool side note.
