I've recently been very tempted to smoke again.... but hearing all this b.s about pot makes me think twice before picking up the blunt... but I've also noticed a lot of people smoke....I mean A LOT! Makes me wonder if the ''anti'' commericals {haha they crack me up}, and all the other propaganda is true. Is smoking really as bad as they make it seem?

No, it's not, though there are obviously some issues with it.

Your only worries are these:

1. Lung issues, because you're smoking it.
2. If you have psychological issues, you should watch how it effects you, cause it can make things worse depending on the person.
3. If you have a specific psychological issue, regarding addiction. It is not chemically addictive but about 10% of weed smokers have a personality trait that gets them psychologically addicted.
4. legal issues.

Noam Chomsky says: "[...] the fear of drugs [...] is very much stimulated by the state and business propaganda. [...] The Drug War is an effort to stimulate fear of dangerous people from whom we have to protect ourselves. It is also a direct form of control of [...] superfluous people who don't really have a function contributing to profit-making and wealth. [...] a war against poor minorities, black males basically. [...] [Look] at the trend lines for marijuana. Marijuana use was peaking in the late '70s, but there was not much criminalization. You didn't go to jail for life for marijuana then because the people using it were nice folks like us, the children of the rich. You don't throw them into jail anymore than you throw corporate executives in jail - even though corporate crime is far more costly and dangerous than street crime. But then in the '80s the use of various 'unhealthy' substances started to decline among more educated sectors: marijuana and tobacco smoking, alcohol, red meat, coffee, this whole category of stuff. On the other hand, usage remained steady among poorer sectors of the population. In the United States, poor and black correllate - they're not identical, but there's a correllation - and in poor, black and Hispanic sectors of the population the use of such substances remained pretty steady.
So take a look at those trend lines. When you call for a War on Drugs, you know exactly who you are going to pick up: poor black people. You're not going to pick up rich white people; you don't go after them anyway. In the upper-middle-class suburb where I live, if somebody goes home and sniffs some cocaine the police don't break into their house.
So there are many factors making the Drug War a war against the poor, largely poor people of color. And those are the people they have to get rid of. During the period these economic policies were being instituted, the incarceration rate was shooting up, but crime wasn't, it was steady or declining. But imprisonment went way up. [...] Poor people are basically superfluous for wealth production, and therefore the wealthy want to get rid of them. The rich also frighten everyone else, because if you're afraid of these people, then you submit to state authority. But beyond that, it's a state industry. Since the '30s, every businessman has understood that a private capitalist economy must have massive state subsidies; the only question is what form the state subsidy will take. In the United States the main form has been through the military system. The most dynamic aspects of the economy - computers, the internet, the aeronautical industry, pharmaceuticals - have fed off the military system. But the crime-control industry, as it's called by criminologists, is becoming the fastest-growing industry in America.
And it's a state industry, publicly funded. It's the construction industry, and also high-tech firms. It's gotten to a scale sufficient that high-technology and military contractors are looking to it as a market for techniques of high-tech control and surveillance, so you can monitor what people do in their private activities with complicated electronic devices and supercomputers: monitoring their telephone calls and urinanlyses and so forth. In fact, the time will probably come when this superfluous population can be locked up in private apartements, not jails, and just monitored to track when they do the wrong thing, say the wrong thing, go the wrong direction.
[... prisoners are] a terrific workforce. We hear a fuss about prison labor in China, but prison labor is standard [in USA]. It's very cheap, it doesn't organize, the workers don't ask for rights, you don't have to worry about health benefits because the public is paying for everything. It's what's called a 'flexible' workforce, the kind of thing economists like; you have the workers when you want them, and you throw them out when you don't want them.
[...] At the very time people were complaining about prison labor in China, California and Oregon are exporting prison-made textiles to China. They even have a line called 'Prison Blues'. [...] Boeing workers are protesting the export of jobs to China, but they are probably unaware that their jobs are being exported to nearby prisons, where machinists are doing work for Boeing under circumstances that the management is delighted over, for obvious reasons. [...] The enormous rate of growth of the prison population has been mostly drug-related. [...] the first thing we've got to do is move it out of the phase of population control, and into the sphere of social issues."

Mumia Abu-Jamal says: "There were times when I was a confirmed pothead - during the '70s mostly. The positive was that it truly opened the doors of perception and expanded my consciousness. The negative was that it sometimes leached me of energy and also sometimes made me frighteningly paranoid. [...] Look at the absurdity of the so-called 'Drug War'. The state targets poor, economically oppressed (predominantly black) neighborhoods for prosecutions of drug use, sends those it corrals to the most severe and lengthy prison terms, in the name of 'protecting people' from drugs. In this case, the 'treatment' is far deadlier than the 'infection'. Further, for many of those who do use drugs, they do so to flee the horrific lives that the system drives people to. [...] The so-called 'Drug War' has some racist underpinnings [...] it may be overstating the case to call it 'ethnic cleansing'. It is however, a part of a larger assault on black life. [...] I don't have any hope for getting justice from the state, but I have hope for the people."

Both quotes have been painstakingly typed from printed editions of High Times.

I don't know about you guys, but I'm gonna smoke a little pot after this one ;-)

Be warned that smokeing (or otherwise using) pot can cause schizophrenia in a small minority of people. Not really cause but if someone is suceptiable to schizophrenia they may get it from smoking pot. They may also get it from doing other things.
It is a case of buyer beware.

As to smoking the stuff, it can screw your lungs. If you use it, use it in cakes or bread or something. Not only does smoking screw your lungs, it could also screw other peoples lungs (which is why you shouldn't smoke in pubs).

I've always prefered cakes as less is wasted. Most things seem to be ok in moderation but smoking near non smokers is just inconsiderate

I'm intruiged to read the full article proving that smoking pot causes schizophrenia, so if anyone has a link it would be appreciated.

Otherwise I don't believe that. Firstly, there's been no long term research into the effects of weed to this day (and the best of my knowledge) and so how it could be proved or even intimated to cause any ailments. Even the smoking aspect is based on tobacco and the fact that it is smoked unfiltered

In truth, we know little if anything about pot.

My own thoughts on this are that it does not induce schizophrenia as such, but as I'm sure many smokers and otherwise alike will have noticed it makes you babble. It is this behaviour - erratic conversation, indicisiveness, paranoia and mood swings - that I believe to be attributed to apparent 'schizophrenia'

I await this arguments dismissal.
Adiel: How can you defend a country where 5 percent of the people control 95 percent of the wealth?
Lisa: I'm defending a country where people can think and act and worship any way they want!
Adiel: Cannot!
Lisa: Can to!
Adiel: Cannot!
Lisa: Can to!
Homer: Please, please, kids; stop fighting. Maybe Lisa is right about America being the land of opportunity, maybe Adiel has a point about the machinery of capitalism being oiled with the blood of the workers.

I'm not gonna dismiss your argument, I'm only gonna say as I said before, it all depends on your psychology.

It's not a major thing, but any drug really can mess you up if you're psychological situation is fragile. It's rare, but it hasppens.

So always remember, set and setting and responsible smoking!

i could see how it could 'bring to the surface' someone's schizophrenia simply because it really brings my anxiety to the forefront. But then again it does nothing to make my depression worse. i have heard that about schizophrenia before.

i didn't have time to read that other's commentaries but smoking pot is way better than smoking cigarrets. but indeed pot ... if anything pot is good for you...just bad for your sperm\eggs in time... but for the most part damn toke it up... the only reason why I would stop is if indeed it does get out of hand but if the weed isn't hitting you the way it used to and supposed to then put that off for a while and then keep going because then it takes more and then you are willing to try crazier shit to get a better high and that is a *****

Be warned that smokeing (or otherwise using) pot can cause schizophrenia in a small minority of people. Not really cause but if someone is suceptiable to schizophrenia they may get it from smoking pot. They may also get it from doing other things.

This is not accurate. To begin you cannot "catch" schizophrenia, it is a genetic neurological disorder.

Much like bulimia nervosa, anorexia nervosa and depression, schizophrenia is a neurotransmitter disorder that can be "triggered" by certain physical or psychological stimuli if you are genetically predisposed to these disorders.

The majority of these individuals will develop a disorder at some point in time regardless if any physical or psychological "triggers" are present, it's simply a matter of time.

There has never been any solid evedence that environmental factors alone can lead to schizophrenia and I doubt there ever will.

I would like to point out that the research done in regards to marijuana use and schizophrenia is hardly conclusive, which is why they can only say that research "suggests" marijuana use can "lead" to triggering schizophrenia.

In addition, the research that exists only examines the activity (as a whole) in the cerebellum and frontal cortexes; it does not examine individual neurotransmitter activity.

It is suggested that marijuana use, like schizophrenia, leads to lower activity levels in the parts of the brain that control motor coordination, memory and complex thinking.

Well that's nothing new, we have known that THC makes you "stupid" and "clumsy" while you are high for some time now.

This is hardly to be considered a "link".

This research was also done by a psychologist, not a neurologist....Big surprise there.

Their suggestions that smoking weed makes you 3 times more likely to develop schizophrenia are incredibly speculative and for the most part absurd.

I doubt this "research" will ever go beyond the "suggestive" stage.

But then again it does nothing to make my depression worse
That is because THC binds to Serotonin and GABA neutotransmitter receptors.
Depression is a combination of disorders in the serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine systems with the majority of the affected neurotransmitters being the serotonin and norepinephrine.

THC does not affect either the norepinephrine or dopamine systems, so subsequently, it wont make your depression "worse" or "better".

Why would you smoke pot, do it if you dont want to atempt anything intellectual but if you expect to do anything involving thinking they dont even attempt.

I'm not exactly against smoking, but be forewarned that it will kill your ambition. Marijuana makes you content with wasting time, because wasting time becomes fun, its during this time you could be teaching yourself. I used to be a pretty big pothead, I gave it up for a while and realized how much better off I am. Now that I'm no longer pre-occupied with scoring weed, I can concentrate on more important things. I've also noticed that if people know that you openly burn, then they won't ever take anything you say seriously, which I suppose isn't the reefers fault, but still.

Doing it every once in a while aint bad I suppose, but making a habit out of it can have its problems.

In truth, we know little if anything about pot.
Actually we know much more than the government would want us to. Hell, government studies under Nixon suggested legalization...and were swept under the rug. Most studies on weed, however, are junk science where they do things like drown monkeys in smoke and inject mice with lethal levels of pure THC! (where can I get my hands on some of that?)

If you smoke it, pot is worse then tobacco (for your lungs).
Well, of course. The smoke is hotter and the shit is unfiltered. Smoking out of a bong (a nice gravity bong costs nothing to make) will make it better for your lungs and they will certainly thank you. I've seen anti-pot studies showing that a joint does the damage of several ciggarattes but of course nobody smokes a pack of joints a day...well, not anyone I know. Still, be careful about screwing up your lungs...it shouldn't be a big risk since I doubt you will be smoking all that much.

Well that's nothing new, we have known that THC makes you "stupid" and "clumsy" while you are high for some time now.
While pot certainly lowers your motor abilities, it is debatable whether or not it makes you stupid. All studies that show this are done on marijuana "virgins" and when a study was done with a control group of such "virgins" compared to chronic potheads it was found that while the "virgins" did terribly on aptitude tests after smoking, chronic smokers did slightly worse, the same, or even better on the same tests!

Why would you smoke pot, do it if you dont want to atempt anything intellectual but if you expect to do anything involving thinking they dont even attempt.
Depends on the person and the thing...I wouldn't try typing a paper though some seem to be better at it when high. My biggest problem is that I can't remember specific details so studying or reading doesn't work, though reading a fantasy novel when toasted is something else and you should all try it! If you want to have a real conversation while high, I highly recommend giving it a shot. The great thing about pot is that it is a highly social drug...when you smoke with others you don't do shit you later regret like you do on alcohol. You can actually be perfectly open with people and they are just as understanding about it when they sober up since they processed the information when they were high. At least, that's been my experience though my experience has been smoking with incredibly intelligent folks.

Oh, if you are worried about becoming impotent from pot, here's how the experiment was conducted:

They injected mice with THC dose LD50 (lethal dose for half of the mice) and found that (of those that survived) 2-5% of sperm were abnormal. Not a big deal, if you ask me.

I would have to comment on this topic of erb causing phychological dissorders.
IF you being a clean and sober individual have had problems with depression and fear of whatever may be in your apparent life, then no, do not use maryjane as a cure, the erb will most likely cause you to drift deeper into depression, it can also cause parinoia, this mostley occures with people who are not farmilliar with using maryjane, (this can be also expained as temporary schitzophreania, where your mind is drifting into deep thought, thought which is so forign from your normal conciousness that you may in fact convince yourself that you are messed! It is a drug of escapism, which will atler your reality, many people use it to find peace and tranquillity from the fast pace of life in which we live, and if you use it responsibly you can definatley find medicinal qualities, which is why I use it!
however like i said, it may not be for everybody.

One of the coolest things I've noticed is that pot helps me eat the food I need for my workout regimine. Normally, I don't get much of an appetite for some reason but weed helps me eat enough to get real results.

Did anyone go to Fill the Hill? I was working so I couldn't make it. Imagine what would happen if people in the states tried to do that... oh man.

I think it should be legalized, it could then be taxed and, hey, the money could go to better things in life. Like, well, health care and public transportation
