I have lost a lot of weigh- and in that process i lost quite a bit of muscle in the process. I can understand eating only veggies for health/whatever but I don't understand, how the fuck can you gain significant muscle mass without MEAT? Sure there is protein in soy (with a lot of negatives, such as high carbs which is bad for muscle massers like me) beans which have to low an output for protein. peanuts which have too much fat and carbs. Protein shakes that don't fully get digested and absorbed into the body. So what does aperson do is is trying to gain muscle mass? I do not see how you cannot eat meat...

umm where are all the vegetarians trying to help me out? I'll tell yuo what. If you can give me a good diet fewer than 1,300 calories a day with 200 grams of protein (and less than 30 grams of carbs) without meat I'll stick to it for at least TWO MONTHS! At my rate that would be 60lbs of meat NOT eaten by me.

Let me just put it this way:
There's a reason why I, as a bodybuilder, is not a vegetarian. You need to eat like 10 different things, to get what you would with ordinary meat, eggs etc.

I have recently taken up running and building upper body strength and I must say that Carbohydrates are important, you need that energy to stay on your feet.
Protein is of course essential if you wish to build up muscle mass, but soy is expensive and eating 10 different things a day does not sound practical to me.

StreetSweeper, I suggest you go back to eating meat, it's easier and cheaper, but watch out for both the fat on meat and what you add to meat.

Hmm I've never faced this problem to tell you the truth. I am an athlete. I go running, biking, yoga, and I am currently pre-black in martial arts. I've been in training for a tournament and have had no problems. I take 3 supplements a day. Eat fruits, and a bowl of oatmeal or rice, and I am good [and a lot of water]. And I've managed to stay extremly healthy and strong enough to come in second in the womens division at my tournament...

I am a vegitarian, and also lift weights and work out. I just eat a significant amount of protein in soy-form, which enables me to build muscle. I don't have the same problem you seem to have.

There are a lot of protein supplements out there. It usually comes in the form of a powder. In addition to protein, you should probably take Creatine.

I think your looking for some miracle diet that does not exist. The basic element of most diets is a starchy complex carbohydrate (maize, potatoes, millet, wheat, and so forth). In addition to the base food there are nutritious supplemental foods (other plant food, oils, flesh, fish, fruits, nuts, seasoning) that help give the base food more flavor. For muscle you need protein and creatine, but besides that you can pick any base foods and supplemental foods you want.
