Give Israel 1st Prize for its Purim costume: "Democracy"

Israel is preparing to deport 40,000 African refugees to likely violence, death and slavery - many of the refugees have begun a hunger strike to oppose the false choice of deportation or indefinite imprisonment. Hundreds of Palestinian children are detained in military prisons, including 17-year-old Ahed Tamimi, who is awaiting her trial in military court behind bars.

Meanwhile, Israel continues to cultivate a perception of itself as a guarantor of human rights, equality and dignity for all - the "only democracy in the Middle East."

Next Monday evening we are awarding Israel first-place in our Purim costume contest for dressing up as a "democracy."

RSVP here to join us next Monday evening, 2/26 at 6:30 pm, outside the Israeli Consulate at 500 W. Madison St., join Jewish Voice for Peace-Chicago for our Purim 5778 Costume Contest!

Purim is a time when we wear costumes to help us envision a different world, one in which power relations between oppressor and oppressed have been inverted. Bring your own costume or use one of the masks, wigs, and other props that we'll have on hand along with groggers and other noisemakers.

RSVP here to join us and tell Israel to #StopDeportingRefugees and #FreeAhedTamimi, and spread the word on Facebook!

Hope to see you Monday,
