Ahed Tamimi is turning 17 - demand her freedom and greet her on her birthday!

Ahed Tamimi, the imprisoned Palestinian teen, is turning 17 on 31 January. Unfortunately, due to the Israeli settler colonial occupation, she will be marking her birthday behind bars in HaSharon prison awaiting a military court hearing, forcibly separated from her mother (also imprisoned) and the rest of her family.

These days are international days of action to support Ahed. You can be a part of wishing Ahed a happy birthday and sending her greetings of solidarity and freedom!

Ahed is one of over 350 imprisoned Palestinian children and over 6,100 Palestinian prisoners in total. These actions not only demand freedom for Ahed but for all of the Palestinians subject to imprisonment, occupation, apartheid and colonialism.

New York rallies for Ahed Tamimi’s birthday

New York, NY — Approximately 100 people gathered in Penn Station during rush hour, Jan. 30, to demand justice for Ahed Tamimi. The action was called by the NY4Palestine coalition.

The rally was part of a national day of action, called to not only celebrate Tamimi’s 17th birthday, but to stand in solidarity with her on the first day on trial. Tamimi was arrested in December for slapping an Israel Defense Forces soldier who had just shot her cousin with a rubber bullet. Tamimi’s case has become emblematic of the Palestinian liberation movement because it shows a courage of a young girl standing up to fully armed soldiers.

People throughout the world have been standing in solidarity with Tamimi and her family.

In Penn Station, protesters gathered to hear speeches and chant for Tamimi’s case. A prominent chant throughout the night was, “Free, free Palestine! Free Ahed, now!”

Jessica Schwartz, from the Committee to Stop FBI Repression, spoke about how Israeli prisons hold hundreds of prisoners, including children, without due process.

The rally ended with the crowd singing Happy Birthday to Ahed.

On December 15, 2017, Ahed Tamimi was part of a demonstration in the occupied West Bank trying to stop the expansion of an illegal Israeli settlement on her family and village lands. Israeli occupation forces fired rubber-coated steel bullets at the demonstrators. After Israeli soldiers occupied the Tamimi home, Ahed attempted to expel two soldiers from the family’s property. Ahed slapped one of the armed soldiers, an incident captured on camera.

Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman threatened that Ahed should suffer “severe” punishment “to serve as a deterrent;” Education Minister Naftali Bennett told Army Radio that Ahed and her family should “finish their lives in prison;” and Cultural Minister Miri Regev called Ahed a “terrorist.”


Israeli forces arrested Ahed in her bedroom late at night on December 19, 2017. She has since been held in detention awaiting trial in a military court that has a 99.7% conviction rate. Ahed has been indicted for assault, incitement, and throwing stones and faces up to 10 years in prison; she has been denied bail even though she has never been indicted before and is not a security risk. On February 13, 2018, at the start of Ahed’s trial, the military judge banned the press. In the words of Ahed’s father, Bassem Tamimi: “The Israeli military occupation does not want diplomats, human right organizations, and the press to see and witness the ugly face of the Israeli military occupation.” Afterwards, it was announced that the trial would be postponed. Two weeks ago, Ahed celebrated her 17th birthday behind bars.

In detention, she endured aggressive interrogations, sometimes at night, and threats made against her family. There is nothing Ahed Tamimi has done that can justify the continuing detention of a 16-year-old child.

Activists have rallied to Ahed Tamimi’s defense demanding that Israel immediately release her. The spirited action of ADC members is needed to further raise awareness about the unjust imprisonment of Ahed and all Palestinian children and demand that Israel free them all!
