Default Karl Marx - Das Kapital

I have many doubts in Marx's Capital, hope someone could clarify them.

    1.) Volume 1 - Part 1 :
The utility of a thing makes it a use value. This property of a commodity is independent of the amount of labour required to appropriate its useful quantities.
How is it independent on labour??
Raw materials require human labour to become products of utility

2.) If exchange value is the amount of labour embodied in a commodity then gold and precious gems which are appropriated without much labour are still sold for high amount

Thanks in advance for any clarifications

    1. A stick is useful and no labor went into its fashioning, thus the utility of a stick is independent of labor.
    2. Symbol value exists as well as exchange value. A piece of gold has less utility than a piece of coal, but more symbol value. There's also scarcity to consider.

All told, don't overthink this stuff.
If we have no business with the construction of the future or with organizing it for all time, there can still be no doubt about the task confronting us at present: the ruthless criticism of the existing order, ruthless in that it will shrink neither from its own discoveries, nor from conflict with the powers that be.
