President Trump has pledged to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), a corporate trade deal that many labor, environmental, immigrant, and community groups raised serious concerns about when it was first signed nearly 25 years ago. Unfortunately, many of our concerns about NAFTA have proven right as polluters have undermined labor and environmental protections, working people from the US, Canada, and Mexico have suffered, and climate change has worsened. As we feared, the results have fed increasing insecurity and displacement, including forcing millions of small producers to leave their homes, communities, and families. But the latest call for “renegotiation” could well result an even worse deal for our communities.
