72 years later

Win Without War

Chris,

72 years ago tomorrow, the United States dropped one of the only two nuclear bombs ever used in war on the bustling seaport of Hiroshima, instantly killing hundreds of thousands of people and destroying the city. Three days later, tens of thousands more civilians were obliterated in another devastating attack, this one on the city of Nagasaki.

The scars of Hiroshima and Nagasaki continue to haunt us. 72 years after the world witnessed unimaginable suffering from nuclear weapons, we still live with an unacceptable risk of a nuclear catastrophe. Today, there are 10 nuclear-armed countries, with the United States and Russia possessing 90 percent of the world’s approximately 15,000 nuclear weapons. Despite progress in reducing their numbers since the end of the Cold War, we are moving backwards. America and its adversaries are increasing the weapons' capabilities and coming up with schemes to lower the threshold for their use.

Please take 2 minutes now to write a letter to the editor urging your members of Congress to take steps to shrink the threat of another Hiroshima.

What’s worse, these are “the President’s weapons,” meaning Donald Trump has sole authority to use them. Though it may be hard to believe, there is nothing standing in the way of Trump’s ability to launch US nuclear weapons. Meanwhile, his administration is prepared to invest $1.2 trillion of our taxpayer dollars to rebuild a nuclear arsenal that will be around for at least another 72 years. This is unacceptable.

That’s where we come in. We simply cannot accept the status quo, but if we don’t speak up, nothing will change. That’s why we need to make our voices heard in newspapers all across the country. Today, politicians think that no one cares about nuclear weapons. We know that’s not true, and now let’s make sure that our voices are heard in every newspaper in America!

Please write a letter to the editor of your local paper urging your members of Congress to support steps towards reducing the threat of nuclear war.

Nuclear weapons do not protect anyone. Every day, their mere existence threatens ours. Nuclear use today would change the world as we know it -- politically, environmentally, psychologically. 72 years after the horrors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, it is time to finally turn the page on the threat of a nuclear catastrophe.

Make your voice heard today by writing a letter to the editor in your local paper.

Thank you for working for peace,

Mariam, Erica, Brittany and the Win Without War team
