    Chris,

A video of six men brutally murdering a trans woman named Dandara in Brazil has just surfaced. The circulation of the video helped police identify the men, but now we need to demand that justice is served for this horrific crime!

We cannot let these men get away with this hate-filled murder. In the video, the men drag 42-year-old trans woman Dandara from her home, kicking her and beating her with wooden planks while yelling transphobic and homophobic things at her. Dandara pleads for her life as they beat her. Eventually, the men put her in a wheelbarrow to cart her off and murder her.

This is an absolutely unacceptable, but all too common violent murder of a trans person. As a global community, we must keep the pressure on the Brazillian government to fully prosecute these men and create harsher penalties for such crimes.

Please sign the petition to demand justice for Dandara!

    Thank you,

    Sarah Rose

As part of a national response to Trump’s attempts to reverse federal protections for transgender students in public schools, a rally was held in Chicago’s Boystown neighborhood. At the February 25, 2017 “Stand Up for Transgender Rights” gathering, speakers explained their objections to Trump’s policies.

Microbiologist Gabriel Vidrine told the assembly: “Conservatives want us barred from public life, from participation in democracy, out of sign, and hidden away. [They] decided to take the coward’s road towards that goal and attack those who cannot defend themselves against it — children. The removal of the guidance for schools allowing transgender children to use the bathroom they are most comfortable in is a direct attack on children, and an indirect one on the ability of transgender people to take part in public life". Kevin Borrini Morrison explained why people beyond the transgender community should also be concerned: “The actions of this current administration have done more to dis-unite communities in the country. We need to stand up…for any part of the community that is being pushed out.” Length 12:25.

Women Rise Up Against Gender Violence in the Caribbean

Justin Podur interviews Joan Joy Grant Cummings

On March 11, survivors of violence against women and their allies and supporters held marches in six Caribbean countries. Started by two Barbadian women, Ronelle King and Allyson Benn, the movement had the hashtag #LifeInLeggings.

In Jamaica, one of the groups marching was the Tambourine Army, a movement of activists dedicated to eradicating sexual violence against women and girls. Some of the Tambourine Army are survivors themselves of sexual violence.

A few days later on March 14, feminist activist and trans advocate from the Tambourine Army, Latoya Nugent was arrested by the Counter-Terrorism and Organized Crime Division of the Jamaica Constabulary Force and charged with "use of a computer for malicious communication" under the Cybercrimes Act. On March 15, the Tambourine Army released a statement about Latoya's medical status concerned about the denial to her of medical attention.

I spoke by phone about this with Joan Joy Grant Cummings in Jamaica, a volunteer at the Caribbean Development Activist Women's Network (DAWN) and a former President of the National Action Committee on the Status of Women (NAC) Canada.
