What General Winter implies that Germany is perfectly analogous to Russia, that 1848 is perfectly analogous to 2014-2017, that the petty nationalistic feelings of today are exactly the same as the revolutionary, democratic and republican nationalist tide of the 1848 revolutions, which is, of course, bollocks. Chris actually puts forward a more nuanced and relatable position on this issue, even if we have core disagreements on the matter, for example whether an "ultra-left" position is good to take currently or not. But General Winter just shows off pure ignorance on history. Advocating for a unitary nation state in 1848 is nowhere the same as advocating irredentism today. The nation state was a progressive idea. Just like bourgeois democracy was a progressive idea back in 1789 or so. The consquence of this thought is not any kind of socialism; the consequence of this nationalist thought is fascism. And what we need to see that it is the idea of national unity that drives both the Azov Battalion and say, the Rusich Company for example. It is the same driving force, the same fascistic tendency, the only difference is in power relations; Ukraine directly is more powerful than the rebels, but Russia, backing the rebels in an indirect way, is on itself more powerful than Ukraine.

I want to say a few words on the modern situation in Ukraine.

A few days ago a known Ukranian musician Oleg Skripka gave an infamous interview and said in particular : "People who cannot learn Ukrainian have a low IQ, so their diagnosis is" lunacy ". We must separate them because they are socially dangerous, we must make ghetto for them.""

The one who whants to understand the feature of Ukraine should read Engels, who wrote in various works about the eternal reactionary nature of national fragments. The talk is about ethnic groups wich keep looking back, because the movement forward naturally destroys them as ethnic groups. Ukrainians are such classic incurable reactionary national fragment. The only prescription here is to forget the farmstead's past and to turn to the world and it's problems. The point is that in this case the Ukrainians inevitably becomes Russian-speaking, because the Russian language is the closest to Ukranians great world language which opens them the world . Here is the root of the hatred of Ukrainian nationalists to Russia. Russia draws Ukrania into the world movement, but at the same time destroys it's ethnicity. And this is an objective and progressive process, wich goes without any violence. It is progressive because it opens the world to a person, as well as the universal distribution of English which gives people a possibility to speak the same language and to act together,is progressive too. So, while the Russian language opens the world to the Ukrainians, then the Ukrainian language being a completely local, closes it.

We see the hatred ofthose who are doomed to a senseless struggle for what is to be a thing of a past. These people can not understand a simple thing: people do not learn Ukrainian not because they are not able to do it, but because they do not need it.

After all nationalist with such hatred towards neighbours will inevitably find in ghetto themselves.
    Any anti-communist is a dog. - Jean-Paul Sartre.

I'm only seeing this now, due to GW's latest post.

I stand by my position at post #18:

I still maintain that it's not enough to just practice abstentionism and ultra-leftism on geopolitical issues -- *some* analysis should be undertaken so that revolutionaries can at least give an account of history, and possibly take a more-progressive stance versus less-progressive stances.

I've realized, though, that at times on other threads I've advocated a *general* 'ultra-left' position, which is admittedly *irresponsible* -- the *problem* with a true ultra-leftism is described in my quote above, from post #18 (equating to abstentionism and irrelevance in the real-world context).
