Dear Chris,
At this writing, 40 Members of the House have co-sponsored the HR 1299, the Berta Caceres Human Rights In Honduras Act, calling for the suspension of U.S. military and police aid to Honduras until human rights violations committed by Honduran security forces cease and their perpetrators are brought to justice, which was introduced on March 2, [1] the anniversary of Berta's assassination. Court documents have linked Berta's murder with the country’s US–trained special forces. [2] Berta's family and human rights organizations have called for an independent international investigation into Berta's murder, but these demands have so far been rebuffed. [3]
Unfortunately, your Representative, Rep. Mike Quigley, is not yet among the co-sponsors. That's disappointing, because last year, Rep. Mike Quigley was among 51 co-sponsors of H.R.5474, the Berta Caceres Human Rights in Honduras Act, calling for the suspension of U.S. military and police aid to Honduras until human rights violations committed by Honduran security forces cease and their perpetrators are brought to justice. [4]
Urge Rep. Mike Quigley to co-sponsor the Berta Caceres Human Rights In Honduras Act now by signing our petition at MoveOn.
Thanks for all you do to help make U.S. foreign policy more just,
