Default BREAKING: Trump strips sanctuary cities

    BREAKING: Trump strips sanctuary cities

Trump is rapidly executing his Law and Order agenda by targeting immigrants

Mayors: #DontGiveIn, fight for your city to be a Sanctuary City no matter what.

    TAKE ACTION!

    Dear Chris,

BREAKING: Trump is following through on a dangerous promise that intends to rip many families apart. There is no “wait and see.”

Trump just signed an executive order targeting cities across the U.S. that are taking a stand to make sure immigrants do not live in fear. Starting today, Trump is stripping federal funds from cities that declare themselves a "Sanctuary City."1 This will affect the 3.8 million Black and Brown immigrants who seek and deserve safety and full protections.

And this is only the beginning: there will be more executive orders signed all the way into next week. Trump won’t stop until all immigrants live in fear, and are banned, detained, deported, and ostracized indefinitely. In the coming days, Trump plans to sign an executive order that will place a temporary ban on refugees and a suspension of visas on immigrants from Muslim majority countries such as Syria, Iraq, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen.2 This fight is daunting. But we can’t let it deter us. And we can’t let our cities’ mayors give in.

Tell your Mayor: #DontGiveIn. Stay strong and fight back against Trump’s Law and Order agenda to remain a Sanctuary City.

Currently, at least 300 cities in the U.S. consider themselves Sanctuary Cities -- including major cities such as Los Angeles, New York, and Chicago-- where local governments do not report, give information about nor turn over immigrants to U.S. Immigration and Customs (ICE).3 But we need the mayors of these cities to do more. Too many “sanctuary cities” still grapple with state sanctioned violence against and pervasive criminalization of Black and Brown people.

We must go beyond sanctuary. For our communities, it means:

We must work to end relationships between local law enforcement and ICE agencies.

Eliminate cities’ investment with private prison companies and their investors.

We must work to end the mass incarceration of Black people within the entire prison industrial complex system.

We will continue to fight back against police violence and hold police departments accountable.

We must make sure families earn a fair livable wage, and sleep in the comfort of a safe, affordable home.

It’s important that all Black people feel safe and live with dignity.

Cities are only“sanctuary” if it includes protecting all Black immigrants. Sign the petition.

Black immigrants will be severely affected by the swift and heinous changes the Trump Administration make. Black immigrants make up a disproportionate number of immigrants that come in contact with police and ICE officials, leading to misdemeanor and felony convictions, thus increasing their chances of being deported. Roughly 3.8 million Black immigrants live in the U.S. but make up at least 20% of immigrants that go through through immigration proceedings such as detention.4 With these executive orders coming in, the vulnerability of Black immigrants will surely increase and many more will not be allowed to enter the U.S.

We must recognize the shared experience between Black immigrants and Black U.S. citizens. When one member of our community is under attack -- we are all under attack. Whether it’s being racially profiled or brutalized by police, or a family member imprisoned in jail or a detention center, or those who do not have the economic means to support loved ones, our stories and struggles matter. This is why it is necessary to stay committed together to make sure cities do not waver if federal monies are taken away or give in to the Trump totalitarianism.

Mayors cannot give in or give up to Trump. When a city is declared a Sanctuary city they must do the work by creating policies and a culture that protects and liberates all Black and Brown people. Cities must remain a Sanctuary even when the federal government rejects them. Right this moment, millions of individuals and families are being told they have no place here. Let’s take a stand and demand mayors to fight and resist Trump.

    Sign the petition.

    Until justice is real,

Rashad, Arisha, Scott, Anay, Clarise, and the rest of the Color Of Change team

Take Action: Support Refugees and Asylum Seekers

Washington, D.C. | www.adc.org | January 25, 2017 - Earlier this week, the Trump Administration announced Executive Orders that will set to institute an Arab and Muslim Ban. Earlier this month, the Asylum Reform and Border Protection Act of 2017 was introduced into the U.S. House of Representatives. The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) calls on you to Take Action. The lives of human beings and current protections for asylum seekers are at stake.

The Executive Orders and H.R. 391 will send Refugees and Children Back to Danger. H.R.391 will modify the treatment of unaccompanied alien children who are in Federal custody by reason of their immigration status, and for other purposes.

Among many changes to law, the bill would:

Raise the expedited removal screening standard to an unduly high level. Even under the current standard, legitimate asylum seekers are denied “credible fear” and the chance to file an application for asylum.

Deny asylum to large numbers of refugees based on transit or stays in countries where they had no legal status or no permanent status, which they can return. Refugees with valid claims would be left in a state of uncertainty, with no prospects for a durable solution and no secure future for themselves and their children. Many would be left in the United States under orders of removal.

Prevent arriving asylum seekers who have passed the credible fear screening process from being paroled from immigration detention. Asylum seekers would be left in jails and facilities with conditions that resemble jails for months or longer, even though there are more humane alternatives.

Allow asylum applicants, unaccompanied children, to be bounced to third countries in the absence of any agreement between the United States and the countries in question for the reception of asylum seekers. This would lead to “refugee ping pong.” The transit country would be likely to return the person to his home country despite fears of persecution, attempt to send him to another country, or bounce him back to the United States.
