And then I went to work to enlist support for the cause. Next week, I will take to the streets of Washington, D.C. along with what I hope will be tens of thousands of Americans who show up to protest everything the Trump-Pence regime stands for and the inauguration itself." read more.

Default Free Speech Victory at the Inauguration - Protest Permits Released

Free Speech Victory at the Inauguration - Protest Permits Released

    Partnership for Civil Justice Fund

Faced with imminent litigation, National Park Service is releasing permits for Ellipse and other Inaugural protest spaces

NPS releases the Ellipse next to White House on January 21st for permitted assembly, made available to the Women's March for closing activities

ANSWER Coalition issued January 20th Inauguration Day Permit to hold rally with stage and sound alongside Trump's Inaugural Parade route

We are pleased to tell you and all those who have been supporting the fight to defend free speech at the Inauguration that we have prevailed in this long, hard-fought battle to secure the Ellipse and other spaces in Washington, D.C. so that they are available for mass assembly gatherings and protest on January 20th and January 21st.

The National Park Service only relented in releasing permits for protest on public space after the PCJF made clear that we would be filing for a preliminary injunction to force the release of permits.

On Jan. 5, the Partnership for Civil Justice Fund notified the National Park Service that litigation was imminent and that permits, including for the Ellipse and other locations, had to be released immediately. We advised them that their withholding of space from the required permitting process, and their giving the Trump Presidential Inaugural Committee the discretion to hold these spaces and keep demonstrators from receiving permits, was in violation of the permanent injunction obtained by the PCJF and entered against the NPS in 2008 in federal court.

After being notified of imminent litigation, the NPS and the Trump PIC reversed course and the NPS issued a statement that they would release the Ellipse and other public spaces for permitted protests.

Permits are now being issued. The Ellipse is being made available to the Women's March, which will now have the opportunity to march into the Ellipse and hold its closing activities adjacent to the Trump White House on January 21st.

For Friday, January 20th, the ANSWER Coalition has been issued a permit for the Navy Memorial plaza space directly abutting the Inaugural Parade route and will set up a 28-foot-long stage and have a sound system. They will now be able to maintain a rally going throughout the day featuring nationally known leaders, grassroots activists and musicians. None of this could have happened without the issuance of a permit. Pacifica Network and other media will now be covering the rally and demonstration live from the Navy Memorial.

The release of these permits is a significant victory for free speech, and we continue to challenge the NPS's unconstitutional operation that is denying full and fair access to our public lands for protests at the Inauguration. It is shameful that the NPS stonewalled, and allowed the Trump PIC to stonewall, the ability of groups to obtain permits to exercise fundamental First Amendment rights until faced with legal action. The PCJF has been fighting for the issuance of these permits for months and we have been in court for more than 15 years challenging the efforts of the government to suppress dissent at the inauguration. Please help us continue this fight.

As the Trump era begins we are entering a period of extreme political turbulence. The agenda of the incoming Trump administration is to roll back or eviscerate fundamental civil, social, economic and political rights that the vast majority of the country holds dear. He plans to put this country's infrastructure, schools and environment up for sale to corporations, banks and hedge funds.

This is a time when grassroots political action, including the exercise of dissent and free speech, is of the gravest importance. The PCJF is committed to the efforts necessary to defend the right to stand up and speak out. Your support made this victory possible, and we hope we can count on you to do everything you can to strengthen this critical defense of the right to free speech. We can only do it together.

    DONATE

NRDC is a Sponsor of the Women's March on Washington!

For the rights of women, and the future of our planet — will you stand with us?

    LEARN MORE

    Chris,

I'm humbled and excited to announce that NRDC has signed on as a sponsor of the upcoming Women's March on Washington taking place the day after Donald Trump is sworn in as president — and I will be speaking at the event.

By adding the full force of NRDC's members and activists to this historic march, we're joining a growing, unstoppable movement of people dedicated to defending our fundamental human rights and speaking out with one voice for all to hear: Women's rights depend on the health of our planet, and the future of our planet depends on women's rights.

I hope you'll stand with us on this momentous occasion:

    WHAT: Women's March on Washington
WHERE: National Mall, Washington, D.C. (and locations in the U.S. and around the world — full list here!)
    WHEN: Saturday, January 21

Whether or not you can join us on the Mall in Washington, D.C., or at a sister march in a city near you, we're asking the entire NRDC community to sign our Women's March Solidarity Action, saying you stand firmly with women — on January 21 and every day — in defense of women's rights and our environment, acknowledging that the two are inextricably and powerfully linked.

Please add your name to our Solidarity Action now — and learn more about how you can get involved in this landmark event or sign up to march with NRDC in Washington on January 21.

It was women in Flint, Michigan, who forced the nation to pay attention to the lead-contaminated water crisis making their children sick and their community suffer.

It was the women of the Standing Rock Sioux tribe who began the game-changing fight against the Dakota Access oil pipeline in North Dakota.

It's women and children who bear the brunt of the effects of climate change and pollution — from the Zika virus and heat-related illness to violent weather events and more asthma attacks.

And it's women who are twice as likely to accept climate change science as men, and to advance environmental protections when they're in government positions.

For me, the Women's March is a critical call to action that resonates deeply — both through my life's work as an environmental advocate and as the mother of a young daughter. I know that it's up to women to stand up for clean air and water, climate justice and the future of our planet.

We're on the frontlines of the environmental fight, and we'll be on the frontlines of the Women's March. Please, stand with us!

Thank you for your support. We'll be following up with more details closer to January 21.

    Sincerely,

    Rhea

Jan 19-21: Bringing Love & Peace

    Dear Chris,

We were appalled when President-elect Donald Trump nominated Jeff Sessions, a blatant racist, to be our next US Attorney General. Sessions opposes criminal justice reform, supports voter repression, and even voted against the Violence Against Women Act! As his confirmation hearing began, we were there in beautiful color, holding signs of End Islamophobia, Stop Sessions, Support LGBTQ Rights, Immigrants Welcome, and End Racism.

We will be continuing to bring this same message as we disrupt business as usual, disrupting the Inaugural, inside and out. Sign up to join us January 19-21 to Rise, Love, and Resist Trump’s incoming administration of intolerance, Islamophobia, racism, militarism, misogyny, and more.

On inauguration day, we will begin at 7 am at Union Station and will start off with the One Billion Rising flash mob dance. We will rise, love, resist, and dance to break the chains of rape culture, hatred, patriarchy, militarism, and violence. We will do all we can to disrupt the Inauguration; to say we will not stand with all forms of hate, racism, Islamaphobia and misogyny but will be accomplices with the most vulnerable among us have been threatened by the new Administration. Outside the inaugural balls and during the Women’s March on Washington, we will wear pussy hats, carry hearts, and create vibrant beauty to show our power to create the world we want to live in. Check out a full schedule of our inauguration activities and sign up to join us!

The next day, we will be joining the Women’s Marches in DC, New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Asheville, NC and Chicago. We will Rise, Love, and Resist together, and grow the connections we need build the world we want. Join us! Check out our visuals and messaging. Default Housing the resistance

    Housing the resistance

    Hi Chris,

Today, Saturday, January 14, 2017, the resistance continues at a higher level. In DC, we are taking to the streets, starting at McPherson Square at 4 pm, marching to the halls of power, every day and every night until we succeed!

Car caravans are starting to arrive in DC from as far away as California, and people are taking buses from along the Eastern seaboard. Housing is needed NOW and more will be needed every day.

Are you coming to DC to STOP the Trump-Pence regime before they can start? Contact anyone you might know in the area about staying with them, ask friends and relatives if they know people they can contact, and if you don’t find accommodations, let us know and we’ll work on housing for you and your crew.

Do you live in the greater DC area? Can you provide housing for volunteers coming from around the country? Let us know here.

Like everything we do, this too will depend on YOU! And please donate generously for materials – flyers, posters, buttons – for these volunteers to blanket DC, for food and transportation costs for those with heart and commitment but no personal resources.

REQUEST / OFFER HOUSING IN DC

    Hey People!

    San Francisco, CA

Join us for a gathering of homeless, formerly homeless and their supporters for self-determination to create REAL solutions for homelessness on Tuesday, January 17th, at Noon in the Civic Center Plaza for the MLK Homeless People Popular Assembly! See the event page>>>

This is part of a coordinated action with the Western Regional Advocacy Project (WRAP), a multi-state alliance fighting for the civil and human rights of those experiencing poverty and homelessness.

CITY CLEARS BOX CITY, OFFERS ONLY 30 DAY SHELTER

San Francisco – In pouring down rain, city officials started clearing “box city” at 7 am this morning. The encampment made up of men and women, including a tight knit group of Tagalog speaking Filipinos rushed this morning to move their belongings through deep puddles and across the street.

Meanwhile, city workers threw belongings into dumpsters, and crushed previously occupied boxes.

The US Interagency Council on Homelessness released best practice guidelines for municipalities recommending that individuals in encampments should have access to housing before they are removed from said areas, and if no such housing exists, to provide temporary shelter that leads to housing. San Francisco is violating those guidelines, as they are only offering temporary housing to camp residents. San Francisco also has the highest number of anti-homeless laws in the state.

“As we are approaching our day to honor Martin Luther King, the poor treatment of box city residents is an example of the fight Dr. King was leading for housing and economic justice for the poor. Here we are 50 years later and we still have unfinished business.” According to Bilal Ali, Human Rights Organizer. “The city must invest deeply in creating true solutions, such as housing for destitute San Franciscans”

Camp residents can relocate to the Navigation Center and then likely return to the streets after 30 days, or they can move their man made shelters a block or two away. Some of the boxes were relocated to Pier 50.

According to one camp resident who preferred to stay anonymous “30 days in the navigation center just isnʼt enough time for me to get help. I canʼt even get my belongings over there”.

    Oakland , CA

Come out on January 19th, rsvp click here to saint Mary's Center's MLK Jr. gathering. Elders will be sharing their perspective on mlk's legcacy and the current movement work to fight the criminalization of poor and homeless people's existence.

    City-sanctioned encampment was swept

Oakland's new "Compassionate Communities" city-sanctioned encampment was swept today at 11 AM. The purpose of setting up these city-sanctioned encampments is in direct response to sweeps, raids, displacement and seizure of property of homeless people all across the country. However, today the city of Oakland brought orders to "clean" the encampment and decrease the size by about a 1/2. This looked like the department of public works employees stealing homeless people's belongings such as tarps, tents, clothes and blankets. People were asked to cross the street while the sweep was happening and take their belongings with them, although many residents of the encampment were not present when the sweep began and had their property stolen or destroyed.

The Oakland Police Department were present as well. About 10-15 advocates and organizers were present to document and interrupt the sweeps. The city employees who work for the "Compassionate Communities" project did not see any issues with their coordinated robbery of the encampment but would not say who the call for the sweep came from. In times of intense weather patterns, like the storm currently brewing in the Bay Area, we know that seizure of property like tents, blankets and tarps can be deadly. Organizers are gearing up to respond to this sweep and plan for the next time the sweep comes before the termination of the project in March.

    Sacramento, CA

Things are really heating up in Sacramento next week. On Monday, January 16th there is a large Reclaim MLK march where organizers will take to the streets in honor of MLK's legacy of fighting the violence of white supremacy and capitalism and the current manifestation of these oppressive systems. Then on January 20th, there will be a day of action in opposition to the Trump presidency. We know that Sacramento is situated differently then other cities in California as the capitol of the state. Join us in rising up and demanding a future where we can all thrive.

    Portland, OR

On Saturday, January 21 join us in a family-friendly march for human rights and a celebration of our community power. For more info >>>

The Oregon #Right2Rest Act was introduced this week! We have a bill number and organizers are gearing up to fight the criminalization of our communities and win some real relief for our loved ones on the streets.

Stay tuned for ways to support the legislative work this season. We know that everyone deserves the right to rest - it's about time the Oregon legislature knows it too. Under the new rise of fascism and the Trump regime, we know that time is even more pressing to abolish laws criminalizing our existence and grow our strength to fight back against the new violent laws that are soon to come down the line. Default Today to STOP Trump/Pence

    Today to STOP Trump/Pence

    Hello,

What you can do today to PREVENT Trump-Pence From Ruling…

4:00 pm this afternoon the people around refusefascism.org in Washington, DC are going into the streets, calling people out to encircle the new Trump Hotel tonight and make clear to all that “we refuse to accept a fascist America,” that we are determined to prevent Trump-Pence from ruling, and that if enough people pour into the streets with us, right now, expressing their humanity and anger and determination, this can both drive forward and combine with significant conflicts at the “top” of society to actually STOP these fascists.

WE MUST DO EVERYTHING WE POSSIBLY CAN TO STOP THIS BEFORE IT STARTS – IT WILL BECOME IMMEASURABLY HARDER TO RESIST AND DEFEAT FASCISM ONCE IT HAS SECURED THE REINS OF POWER.

    What can you do?

    1) If you are in DC or Baltimore or Virginia or anywhere even two hours away, you can find your way down there to be part of this, to strengthen this. At this stage, every single person counts. We speak for and embody the sentiments of millions and even hundreds of millions or more (speaking globally), but right now those who have stepped out need to grow and become a magnetic force. A few people boldly stepping out at the beginning has, throughout history, set off the most historic and far-reaching changes. Be part of this NOW; make this idea a magnetic force. Facebook Event

Video from last night's hours long march in DC
much more on refusefascism.org & @refusefascism on Twitter

    2) Donate $. There ARE people in DC and we need money to not only house them and feed them, but to amplify their message through a real ad campaign. They are committed. They are not backing down. They are not quitting. And they need you to make it possible for their voices to be heard. Share the crowd-funding campaign.

    3) If you are not anywhere close to DC and cannot get there, take the word of this onto social media now. Spread the memes and the videos and all the rest, let people know about it, make it go.

If you're on FaceBook, manually invite all your friends... ask them to share with people in and around DC... and with everyone they know, asking them to share with people in and around DC.

    Default Monday to Stop Trump/Pence

    Monday to Stop Trump/Pence

    Hi Chris,

Monday, Jan 16 – 4:00 pm – for the 2nd day in a row, people around refusefascism.org in Washington, DC are going into the streets, calling people out to encircle the new Trump Hotel tonight and make clear to all that “we refuse to accept a fascist America,” that we are determined to prevent Trump-Pence from ruling, and that if enough people pour into the streets with us, right now, expressing their humanity and anger and determination, this can both drive forward and combine with significant conflicts at the “top” of society to actually STOP these fascists.

New VIDEO: The Time Is Now. Get Organized to Stop the Trump-Pence Regime Before It Starts

WE MUST DO EVERYTHING WE POSSIBLY CAN TO STOP THIS BEFORE IT STARTS – IT WILL BECOME IMMEASURABLY HARDER TO RESIST AND DEFEAT FASCISM ONCE IT HAS SECURED THE REINS OF POWER.

    What can you do?

If you are in DC or Baltimore or Virginia or anywhere even two hours away, you can find your way down there to be part of this, to strengthen this. Call 213-804-1811 or email [email protected] now to get connected.

Donate $. There ARE people in DC and we need money to not only house them and feed them, but to amplify their message through a real ad campaign. They are committed. They are not backing down. They are not quitting. And they need you to make it possible for their voices to be heard.

    Donate Now

If you are not anywhere close to DC and cannot get there, take the word of this onto social media now. Spread the memes and the videos and all the rest, let people know about it, make it go.

If you’re on FaceBook, go through and manually invite all your friends… ask them to share with people in and around DC… and with everyone they know, asking them to share with people in and around DC.

    Chris,

Please read and consider this important message from Emma Kaplan, member of the World Can't Wait Steering Committee:

My name is Emma and I am one of the many volunteers who came to Washington DC to STOP Trump and Pence from coming to power. Not waiting until Friday or Saturday but to stop him from being inaugurated as President of the United States.

We have been out in the streets every day and every night here in DC, growing to hundreds and tonight we must grow to thousands & soon to millions to bring DC to a halt.

Last night we shut down the Trump International Hotel. New people have been joining us off the sidelines, running in the streets hugging us, tears filling their eyes and joy filling their hearts. A significant number of people are beginning to feel hope for something that seemed so impossible days ago, now feeling like we have a real chance. But we have to grow massively and the next couple of days are decisive.

This is why I am sending this message to you, to everyone reading.

Let me tell you why I am here and am throwing EVERYTHING I can into stopping this before it starts:

I am one of millions who is sick to their stomach of the thought of Donald Trump becoming president. The idea of him being president and getting the reins of power is horrifying. He talks about faith registries, has started a nuclear arms race. He talks about pussy grabbing, punishing women for excercising control over their own bodies. He talks about stripping away citizenship for those who express what are supposed to be constitutional rights. He demonizes and degrades black and brown people and used a violent movement to come to power. He will escalate what is already an environmental catastrophe.

Let me tell you why all this shakes me to my core. My great grandparents and my grandmother's baby brother were murdered in Auschvitz in Nazi Germany. I am one of the many people here in DC with this history, the stories and the memories of people gassed in concentration camps, of the numbers on people's arms.

We all have wondered how could people stand by and let this happen. We shame the German people for not acting to stop it.

Yet now, we are all facing an American Hitler. This is not hyperbole or an exaggeration. There are many different types of definitions of fascism and Donald Trump fits every single one of them. Today the stakes could be even higher, with Trump having the power of nuclear weapons and a military that Hitler couldn't even dream of.

We all have to confront this soberly and act accordingly. There are tens of millions of us who are sick about what Trump represents and if they flood DC before the inauguration, we have a chance.

Don't talk to me about "the odds" of doing this if you are not out in the streets doing everything you can to STOP Trump/Pence from coming to power. Get in a car, get in a train, get on a bus and get your ass to DC in the next 24 hours. Call in sick, tell your work that you have a family emergency. Because this IS an emergency for families everywhere. The families who will be ripped apart from deportations and an escalation of mass incarceration and police murder.

Don't wish me good luck or tell me "keep it up," if you absolutely can't come because you are bed-ridden, or have 6 children, be in the streets when you can. Make a donation to support people who are able to be here. Follow the action on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and share with others.

The other night Carl Dix, a man who I deeply respect said, "Don't be a 21st century Good German, be a Harriet Tubman."

We all have a choice, who will you be?

    Default "I" is for Illegitimate

    "I" is for Illegitimate

    Hi Chris,

While we spread the "NO!" everywhere, Carl Dix & Cornel propose:

On Wednesday, January 18, wear the letter “I” for “Illegitimate” all day long …
Wear the “I” Because We Refuse To Accept An Illegitimate, Fascist, Trump-Pence Regime. That’s step 1.
Step 2: Make a video and post it on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram.
Be creative. Let the world know that Trump and Pence are illegitimate. Here are images to print

A message from RefuseFascism.org initiators Carl Dix & Cornel West to take up the "I" Challenge:

    Wednesday January 18 2017
    Wear the “I” for Illegitimate

Donald Trump and his fascist regime are illegitimate. Representative John Lewis has made the question of Trump’s illegitimacy a mass question. Then, Trump’s vile and impetuous Twitter response attacking Lewis revealed the depth of his venomous racism. The rawness of this has opened up the potential for many people to take a stand – making it known that they too regard Trump as illegitimate.

Therefore, as part of and contributing to the movement to Stop the Trump-Pence Regime from being able to rule, we propose: On Wednesday January 18, wear the letter “I” for “Illegitimate” all day long.

    WHY?

Because Donald Trump has said that he is going to put people in jail and deprive them of their citizenship for expressing political dissent.

Because it is illegitimate to suppress the media.

Because it is illegitimate to deprive entire sections of people of basic fundamental rights simply due to their membership in a particular group of people, starting with Muslims & immigrants.

Because it is illegitimate to threaten an entire group, or entire groups, of people with suspension of the right against illegal search and seizure without probable cause, with the only probable cause being that they are Black or Latino.

Because it is illegitimate to torture people, and to punish the families of people who are suspected of crimes.

Because it is illegitimate to say that merely because a judge comes from a minority nationality they should be disqualified for rendering legal judgment on Trump.

Because it is illegitimate to say that the 5 Black youth – the Central Park 5 – who Trump baselessly accused of a crime, even calling for their execution in full page ads in NYC. Then, 12 years later when they were fully exonerated, Trump said that they should be kept in jail anyway.

Because it is illegitimate, in sum, to institute a form of government that deprives people of their most fundamental rights. Everything here is what Trump has either promised to do or stated should be done.

    Signed,
    Carl Dix
    Cornel West

Default Stand shoulder to shoulder with us on January 21st.

Stand shoulder to shoulder with us on January 21st.

Join the fight for salud, dignidad, and justicia with NLIRH.

    Dear Chris,

The National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health (NLIRH) is proud to be a national partner of the Women’s March on Washington this weekend, and in over 200 other cities around the world. Many Latinxs* will join in the chorus of thousands of voices, taking to the streets on the first day of this new presidential administration and vowing to continue to speak out.

For over 20 years, NLIRH has organized and mobilized people across the country to support health, dignity, and justice for Latinxs, our families, and our communities.

Will you join us and be ready to defend against any and all attacks on our communities? Stand shoulder to shoulder with us in our continued struggle to advance justice and equity for all people? Together we will boldly assert that we won’t rest until all people are treated with dignity and respect, have access to quality, affordable healthcare -- regardless of where they live, how much money they have in their pocket, or their immigration status. Together we will remind politicians that when they block or limit access to critical reproductive healthcare services, they are making it fundamentally impossible for women to take care of themselves and their families.

I cannot emphasize enough that our work did not start or end with this election and, with your support, we can continue to be strong and fight for justice for all. In this march, with big hearts and a strong vision, we publicly and resoundingly recommit to advancing the causes and values of health, dignity, and justice.

You can find all of the information for attending the Women’s March on Washington, including registration, busing and lodging, here.

For more information on how you can register for any one of the multiple sister marches taking place across the country, as well as busing and lodging information, please click here.

Now more than ever, it is critical that you join us as we fight against harmful policies at both the state and federal level, by advancing a vision of our nation where reproductive justice- in all of its dimensions- is a reality for everyone.

Thanks for all your continued support!

Default Reminder & Logistics for J20 SF Labor Rally (4:30 pm, in front of Carl's Jr.)

Reminder & Logistics for J20 SF Labor Rally (4:30 pm, in front of Carl's Jr.)

    PLEASE EXCUSE DUPLICATE POSTINGS

To: S.F. union members and labor supporters:
Re: J20 Labor Rally to Stop the Trump Administration's Anti-Labor agenda!

    Dear Sisters and Brothers:

We are only a few days away from the Trump inauguration and from our 4:30 pm Labor Rally in front of Carl's Jr (NW corner of 7th & Market Sts., Civic Center BART). And we will be there with our union banners, union colors, and union signs, RAIN OR SHINE!

Yes, the weather forecast calls for light rain, so be prepared. Also, make sure to wrap any paper or cardboard signs in plastic.

We have organized a short, half-hour rally program. We want to start on time and finish by 5 pm -- when the main anti-Trump rally and march begins -- so we are asking folks to get there early (4:15 pm would be ideal).

We urge all union officers to make copies of the attached pdf for your members -- and/or post the leaflet to your website/social media and/or forward the pdf to your members and supporters. If you are not able make copies, send us a note care of Alan Benjamin ([email protected]) and we will drop off leaflets.

We also urge union members and labor supporters to get the word out about this Labor Rally to your co-workers, friends and family. We would like to see as big a labor-community turnout as possible.

Also, keep in mind that we will be marching as a labor contingent from UN Plaza, so please bring your comfortable walking shoes -- yes, the ones that are certain to get a lot of wear in the coming weeks and months, as we take to the streets time and again to turn back the Trump anti-labor offensive.

We will be looking for labor volunteer monitors for our labor contingent during the march. Please contact us if you are able to help.

BART and MUNI are your best means of transportation to get there, but if you are coming from out of town and need to drive, we are sending below some parking garage options near Civic Center.

Thank you and see you Friday at the Labor Rally!

    In solidarity,

Alan Benjamin, Gordon Mar and Art Persyko,

RE: Skip the inauguration of hate (sign the petition)

    Dear Chris,

More than 126,000 people have joined you in signing our petition urging Democrats to skip Donald Trump’s inauguration.

Trump’s appalling response to civil rights legend and progressive champion Rep. John Lewis’ decision last week to stay away from his inauguration has been a game changer. As of now, at least 60 congressional Democrats have announced that they are skipping the inauguration, but too many Democrats in Congress, including every Senate Democrat, are still remaining silent.

Democrats who attend the inauguration will help normalize Trump’s racism, misogyny and hate. We must keep the pressure on to make sure Democrats do the right thing.

Can you share this action with your friends and family via email, Facebook or Twitter? Or just forward the email below

Thank you for everything you do,
    - Nicole

    Dear Chris,

Rep. John Lewis’ decision to stay away from Trump’s inauguration is a game changer. Right now, at least 60 Congressional Democrats have announced that they are skipping the inauguration. We must keep the pressure on.

On Friday, Rep. Lewis announced that he would skip the inauguration. He also called Trump’s presidency illegitimate given CIA, FBI and NSA reports of Russian cyber attacks that tipped the electoral scales for Trump.1

Trump’s retaliation on Twitter was beyond appalling, even for Trump. He called Rep. Lewis “all talk, talk, talk - no actions.”2 Rep. Lewis survived a brutal police beating in Selma, Alabama in 1965 while fighting for racial justice and voting rights and has been a consistent advocate for racial justice in his years as a member of Congress. The backlash against Trump has been immediate, with 60 Democrats, including Congressional Progressive Caucus Co-Chair Keith Ellison, joining fellow progressive champions like Reps. Luis Gutierrez, Barbara Lee, and Raul Grijalva to stand with Rep. Lewis and skip the inauguration.

As Trump himself helped make clear, Democrats have a choice: They can stand with civil rights hero Rep. Lewis and stay away from the inauguration or attend the inauguration and help legitimize Trump’s racism, misogyny and hate.

Too many Democrats in Congress, including every Senate Democrat, are still remaining silent. This is not the time for compromise or decorum. We need to do everything we can to make sure Democrats do the right thing.

Tell Democrats in Congress: Skip the inauguration of hate.

Politicians who attend the inauguration will be legitimizing and normalizing Trump’s presidency and his hateful agenda. In fact, Trump’s tweets gave right-wing lawmakers license to berate Rep. Lewis with racist statements scolding him for speaking out.

Mike Pence said that Donald Trump, a racist bigot, would do more for Black people than Rep. Lewis ever did.3 A Georgia official called Rep. Lewis a racist pig on Facebook.4 Maine Gov. Paul LePage, said that Rep. Luis should be grateful for everything Republican presidents have done for Black people, including the emancipation of slaves, essentially whitewashing and rewriting the history of the racial justice and civil rights movement in America.5

Trump’s attack on Rep. Lewis, a civil rights hero who is entering his 30th year as a U.S. Representative, has helped draw an even brighter line between Congressional Democrats who will fight against Trump’s hateful regime and those who won’t.

Speak out now to tell all Democrats in Congress that you’re counting on them to stand with Rep. Lewis and refuse to attend the inauguration.

Tell Democrats in Congress: Skip the inauguration of hate.

    Thank you for speaking out,

    Nicole Regalado, Campaign Manager

You know what the right-wing sector, the libertarians and other anti-socialism sectors of USA are saying? That the J-20 is a conspiracy by the the ultra-right wing neoliberalism pro-free trade, pro-NAFTA hawks of the US governmnet to kill Donald Trump, because according to them Donald Trump is trying to install a nationalist anti-neoliberal political system in USA, and the corporate oligarchic plutocracy of USA is pro-neoliberalism, pro-free trade, pro-wars

J20 Washington DC - Shut Down Trump's Inauguration

    J20RESIST.ORG DONATE FACEBOOK EVENT PAGE

WE REFUSE! NO PASÁRAN! SHUT DOWN TRUMP’S INAUGURATION

J20resist.org is a resource to assist this historic moment. It is a way for peopleall over the country to coordinate to push back against Trump and those who enabled his rise to power.

At J20resist.org groups and individuals can connect up, coordinate travel to DC, connect with local actions – student walk-outs, stay aways, shut downs and rallies in the U.S. and around the world.

On January 20th, hundreds of thousands of people will be storming the streets across the US against Trump’s accelerated assault on migrants, LGBTQ people, women, unions, people of color, and the entire working class.

Now more than ever, we need massive resistance in the streets to shut down Trump’s agenda of racism, sexism, migrant-bashing, cutbacks and war. With capitalism in decline, this agenda can be a recipe for fascism.

While both the Democrats and the Republicans are telling us now to accept the results of the election and look to “work with” President Trump, we completely refuse to accept this racist billionaire as the leader of this country. Trump has no solutions for the real issues faced by billions of workers across the world.

Capitalism, imperialism and the racist cops occupying our communities are the real problem. We, the millions of people ready to take direct action against the attacks of a Trump administration, are the solution.

Only mass action can push back this racist, sexist agenda. We are entering a new era of historic resistance, led by the struggles of Black Lives Matter and the water protectors at Standing Rock. We stand ready to put our bodies in front of deportation busses, bulldozers, tanks and other war machines. The working class and oppressed must join together in this historic moment with the full understanding that real power is in the streets, not in the White House and not the Pentagon.

Let’s show on January 20th that another world is possible. There is an alternative to racist terror, sexist oppression, homophobia, transphobia, migrant-bashing and bigotry. There is an alternative to capitalism and fascism.

On January 20th, let’s shut down DC with a historic mobilization of the people, united against Trump’s assault on the people.

Let’s fight for the revolution we really need. Now is our time to be in the streets.

We say NO to Trump, NO to Clinton, NO to capitalism, NO to war and NO to the two-party system that supports all of the above.

On Friday, January 20th, we will make sure our collective voice is heard throughout the halls of power and across the world.

I think the national security establishment is going to bring as much pressure onto the Trump presidency as possible, regardless. Yes Trump is relatively more of an isolationist than the Clinton faction, but there's already plans to increase military spending and tax breaks for the rich under Trump. (The Democrats are already so far to the right that the social spending plans of *either* party are going to be anti-humane anyway -- hence the past popularity around Sanders, the populist.)

    From Initiators of RefuseFascism.org

    Hi Chris,

    January 18, 2017

To all the fighters, artists, scientists, teachers, students… to everyone who has signed the Call to Action and taken up the fight to Stop the Trump/Pence Regime from taking power:

First, much appreciation to the over 6,000 who have signed The Call; to all who have donated; to all who have spread the word on social media; to the musicians and artists against fascism; to all who have taken to the streets in cities across the country, including those camping out in front of City Hall in Los Angeles; and most of all, to those who are braving the cold and rain in Washington, DC to fight night after night to rouse millions of people to say NO! to a Fascist America.

Here we cannot list all of what you and we have done. Know this: RefuseFascism.org has already put the truth before millions of people – the truth that many would not speak: that the Trump/Pence regime is fascist by any definition, that you can’t wait fascism out, you can’t conciliate with fascists, and you can’t work with or collaborate with fascism. We have rightly said that if we do not prevent the Trump/Pence regime from consolidating its hold on power, we will all be standing on different dangerous ground with a qualitatively more difficult fight to overcome what this regime is intent on doing.

We stand on the cusp of a historic moment – when what we do is impacting millions of people, and still has the potential to move them to take unprecedented action. Yet, developments in the struggle have not turned out as was needed. It now seems much more likely than not that masses of people in their millions are not going to flood into the streets in the day and half before the inauguration to create the kind of political crisis that could prevent the inauguration. At the end of this letter, we are making an important adjustment to our plans that essentially call for adjusting and intensifying our work over the next several days.

To understand this juncture, and what to do, we need to step back and confront again the situation humanity faces.

We wrote in the Call to Action: “Fascism is a strong word. It is a very serious thing. It has direction and momentum that must be stopped before it becomes too late. Fascism foments and relies on xenophobic nationalism, racism, misogyny, and the aggressive re-institution of oppressive ‘traditional values.’ Fascism feeds on and encourages the threat and use of violence to build a movement and come to power. Fascism, once in power, essentially eliminates traditional democratic rights.” Is this not what we have seen emerging every day since the election?

In the face of this, we have spoken truthfully that the people’s only recourse was and remains mass action of millions of people acting together outside the normal political processes to force every faction of the political power structure to respond to our actions and our demand.

Today, two days out from the scheduled inauguration of Donald Trump and his government of reactionary fascists, the situation is perilous and in tremendous flux. Representative John Lewis has made Trump’s illegitimacy a mass question. Trump’s venomous racist twitter response to Lewis has opened up the potential for many people to take a more resolute stand against the regime. We are calling for people to wear an “I” along with the “NO!” starting on Wednesday 1/18 and continuing.

Currently over 60 Congress people are boycotting the inauguration revealing the even larger cracks in the power structure, even as, for now, the center is holding. There is scandal and dissension roiling among those who wield power. And yet, Trump/Pence looms.

In the midst of this fraught situation Refuse Fascism is in the mix – disrupting the Jeff Session’s Hearing in an action seen around the world, marching in the streets of DC with hundreds joining the marches on the Trump International Hotel over the weekend and shutting it down for a period of time, with pictures and video spreading on the web, and on local news in DC. Everywhere the volunteers have gone, the response has been positive from many sections of the people. There is a simmering depth to the anxiety and outrage that people feel about what is looming. But, the masses of people in their thousands and millions have not yet stepped out of business as usual to get in the streets and stay in the streets the way people in South Korea or Tahrir Square in Egypt did several years ago.

The reasons for this are many and we are not going to attempt an analysis here… certainly President Obama, VP Biden, and Bernie Sanders all telling people that “it’s over,” that Trump won and that people should work with him where “we can” and wait and see what he does has lulled people into not seeing the urgency of acting before these fascists have their hands on the repressive apparatus of the government, have the full power of the state to intimidate and suppress the dissent and the truth.

But, the important and urgent point is this: the situation is very much “in play.” We are in an extreme situation and dissension in all strata of society is sharp. There are all kinds of protests by many different forces that are going to unfold over the next several days. Refuse Fascism is going to keep pushing with our basic message and our actions in DC and around the country. The NO! needs to spread like never before. There are many factors that could come into play to push things over the edge where people feel that enough is enough, that they must act, they must disrupt their lives to prevent a great catastrophe. This could be a new damning revelation about Trump, a tweet from Trump that is the last straw, an act of repression or violence from his fascist followers… any of these or other factors could kick things onto a whole other level of struggle on all levels of society. This is a historical moment when what seems impossible on the surface could be possible, but only if there are people with the vision and determination to lead.

Even if this doesn’t happen before the inauguration, the struggle around and in the wake of the inauguration could become more intense. There are many groups and sections of the people planning significant protests and cultural outpourings and events from NY to California over the next 2 days. Here in DC, a group called “Disrupt J20” plans to act on inauguration day. The next day hundreds of thousands are expected for “The Women’s March On Washington.” Depending on how all of this plays out and interacts and interpenetrates with other developments, including the things that Trump will do on “day one,” the situation continues to hold the potential to develop into a more sustained resistance. In sum, there are many different factors that could still come together to give rise to the kind of political crisis that is needed to prevent the Trump-Pence Regime from gaining power, or to prevent it from consolidating its hold on power, and then to drive it from power in the days immediately after the inauguration.

It is our assessment that we need to go all out and intensify all our efforts over the next days before the inauguration to inspire and move masses of people into active resistance to stop this regime, even as we recognize that the battle may continue for several days after the inauguration if not prevented to stop the Trump-Pence regime from consolidating its power. We are proposing and calling for a change in our plans – to continue to call people to get into and stay the streets on Friday and beyond, calling for resistance and no business as usual next Monday and Tuesday.

The following from Refuse Fascism’s Mission and Plan is as true and urgent as when put forth 6 weeks ago:

"Imagine if people, in the tens of millions, filled the streets, powerfully declaring that this regime is illegitimate and demanding that it not be allowed to rule! The whole political landscape would be dramatically transformed, every faction within the established power structure would be forced to respond—and all this could well lead to a situation in which this fascist regime is actually prevented from ruling. This is not some idle dream but something which could be made a reality if all those who hate what is represented by this fascist regime translate their outrage into firm determination and massive mobilization to create the conditions which make this possible."

Let’s rise to this moment and fight with all we’ve got. We have brought forth an incredible, diverse and determined group of people who recognize the danger, who have sounded the alarm, and are prepared to lead millions of people to defeat this fascist regime. We do this not for ourselves alone, but in the Name of Humanity.
