Since 2007, Urban Shield has brought police agencies and weapons giants from around the world together in California. This weekend they will be at it again. After a decade, we've had enough: #StopUrbanShield!

Two years ago, the Stop Urban Shield Coalition demanded that the City of Oakland stop hosting the weapons expo and won! Yet Urban Shield - the largest SWAT training in the world - continues to take place in nearby Pleasanton, with participating SWAT teams, emergency respondents, and arms dealers only growing in number and public funding. But our side is getting stronger too, and we've got the momentum!

Today we are at the Alameda County Board of Supervisors Meeting demanding that they no longer use taxpayer dollars to train law enforcement in combat tactics to be used against our communities, all in the name of "emergency preparedness."

I am writing to urge you and all Alameda County Board of Supervisors to take leadership in putting an end to the militarization of police and disaster preparedness represented by the annual Urban Shield exercises and weapons expo, funded by DHS through the Urban Areas Security Initiative. For too long, the Sheriff has gone unchecked in amassing militarized weaponry, surveillance technology, and hosting highly controversial trainings like Urban Shield that result in the further marginalization of our communities. Urban Shield’s emphasis on SWAT teams as the response to emergencies - including natural disasters - as well as the extremely militarized scenarios, diminishes resources for responding to the ordinary emergencies community members face every day. Alameda County should not be hosting war games funded by the Department of Homeland Security, which involve not only nine Bay Area counties, but teams from around the United States. That is why I ask you to exercise your leadership and reject any future funding and hosting of Urban Shield, and to stand with Alameda County communities, and people across the country.

Action Alert: Urge the City of Berkeley to withdraw from Urban Shield


Dear friend,

We need your help to stop another city from participating in a program that will put their own residents in danger.

With the Trump administration ramping up its attacks against people of color, Black communities, indigenous people, and immigrants, it's more important than ever to put an end to militarized policing programs that devastate our communities.

Next week the City of Berkeley will consider withdrawing from Urban Shield, the largest military SWAT training and weapons expo event in the world.

It’s funded by the Urban Areas Security Initiative, a Department of Homeland Security grant program that also funnels money to 39 urban areas around the United States for local law enforcement to attain military weaponry and training – everything from armored vehicles, riot gear, and spying equipment.

Join us in urging Berkeley officials to stand with communities and end their participation and support for this program.

Don't live in Berkeley? We ask you to call anyway. Let the Berkeley City Council know where you are from and remind them that their participation impacts not only their constituents but people all over the country.
