The family and friends of Berta Caceres consider the Honduran government's investigation of her murder a cover-up of its complicity and is demanding an independent investigation by the InterAmerican Human Rights Commission.

The Agua Zarco hydro-electric dam project is a project that Berta Caceres and the community she represented were organizing to oppose because planned along a river sacred to the indigenous Lenca people.

The US government has given about $65 million in military and security aid to Honduras since the 2009 coup - in an effort to aid the coup government in repressing the popular movement against the coup.

Honduras has increasingly become a hub for U.S. military operations in Central America

Today, Tuesday June 14th listen to Worldview on WBEZ at noon to hear an interview with the coordinator of COPINH, Honduras. (Consejo Cívico de Organizaciones Populares e Indígenas de Honduras) Tomás Gómez Membreño and La Voz's own Matt Ginsberg-Jaeckle.

Honduras: ” They want to terrorize the communities that fight to defend their territory”

    Alex Anfruns

In Honduras, seven months after the murder of Berta Cáceres, the environmentalist leader renowned for her tenacity in the fight for the environment and the rights of indigenous communities, a new assassination attempt took place against Tomás Membreño, the new leader of the Civil Council of Popular and Indigenous Organizations of Honduras (COPINH). We talked to Bertha Zúñiga, daughter of Berta Cáceres, to understand the causes of this widespread violence against all those who denounce the policies of the Honduran government together with corporate and media elites. Although there are a several ongoing criminal investigations, there seems to be little reason for hope in the near future…

Remember Berta: Suspend Military Aid to Honduras!

    Dear Chris,

Urge your Rep. to suspend military & police aid to Honduras.

    Take Action

On March 2, 2016, environmental activist Berta Caceres was assassinated in Honduras. [1] Leaked court documents suggest Berta's murder was planned by military intelligence specialists linked to the country’s U.S.–trained special forces. [2] Global Witness calls Honduras the deadliest country in the world for environmental activism. [3]

Today, Rep. Hank Johnson (GA) re-introduced the Berta Caceres Human Rights In Honduras Act, calling for the suspension of U.S. military and police aid to Honduras until human rights violations committed by Honduran security forces cease and their perpetrators are brought to justice. [4]

Urge House Members to co-sponsor the Berta Caceres Human Rights In Honduras Act by signing our petition at MoveOn.

Thanks for all you do to help make U.S. foreign policy more just,
