    Hello everybody,


    I would like you to watch a video taken from YouTube.
    This video is centered mainly on Pier Paolo Pasolini's critical view about fascism and consumerism.

    Pier Paolo Pasolini is considered to be one of the greatest Italian personalities of the twentieth century. He was a poet, writer, cinema and theatre director and author. He spent his entire life defending his left-oriented ideas and his homosexuality until his murder.

    I will not add any further information about him in this post. You can easily find them via Internet.

    Since the following video is entirely in Italian, you will find below the translation of the both introductory message as well as the very words spoken by this extraordinary person. My English is far from being perfect, therefore my translation may contain some mistakes. Thank you in advance for your understanding.

    INTRODUCTORY MESSAGE

    On the evening of 7th february 1974, the Italian state-owned public broadcasting service, RAI, broadcast a new short TV documentary of the series “Me and...” entitled “Pasolini and... the shape of the city” curated by Paolo Brunatto.

    While the TV documentary was about to finish, Pasolini was walking nervously through the sand dunes on the coastline of Sabaudia when he stopped suddenly. He showed to the camera his suffering, gaunt face, denouncing the aesthetic devastation as well as the civil barbarisation that the consumer society would have led to. This type of society has been conceived by post-fascist Italian republic and by all contemporary “democratic regimes” in general.

    ITALIAN TEXT

    Eccoci di fronte alla struttura, alla forma, al profilo di un’altra città immersa in una specie di grigia luce lagunare, benché intorno ci sia una stupenda macchia mediterranea. Si tratta di Sabaudia. Quanto abbiamo riso noi intellettuali sull’architettura del regime, sulle città come Sabaudia. Eppure adesso, osservando questa città, proviamo una sensazione assolutamente inaspettata. La sua architettura non ha niente di irreale, di ridicolo. Il passare degli anni ha fatto sì che questa architettura di carattere littorio assuma un carattere, diciamo così, tra il metafisico e il realistico. Metafisico in un senso veramente europeo della parola, cioè ricorda mettiamo la pittura metafisica di De Chirico, e realistico perché, anche vista da lontano, si sente che le città sono fatte, come si dice un po’ retoricamente, a misura d’uomo. Si sente che dentro ci sono delle famiglie costituite in modo regolare, delle persone umane, degli esseri viventi completi, interi, pieni, nella loro umiltà.

    Come ci spieghiamo un fatto simile che ha del miracoloso? Una città ridicola, fascista, che improvvisamente ci sembra così incantevole?

    Bisogna esaminare un po’ la cosa, cioè: Sabaudia è stata creata dal regime, non c'è dubbio; però non ha niente di fascista in realtà, se non alcuni caratteri esteriori. Allora io penso questo: che il fascismo, il regime fascista, non è stato altro, in conclusione, che un gruppo di criminali al potere. E questo gruppo di criminali al potere non ha potuto in realtà fare niente, non è riuscito a incidere, nemmeno scalfire lontanamente la realtà dell’Italia. Sicché Sabaudia, benché ordinata dal regime secondo certi criteri di carattere razionalistico, estetizzante, accademico, non trova le sue radici nel regime che l’ha ordinata, ma trova le sue radici in quella realtà che il fascismo ha dominato tirannicamente ma che non è riuscito a scalfire. Cioè è la realtà dell’Italia provinciale, rustica, paleo-industriale eccetera eccetera, che ha prodotto Sabaudia, e non il fascismo.

    Ora invece succede il contrario. Il regime è un regime democratico eccetera eccetera, però quella acculturazione, quella omologazione che il fascismo non è riuscito assolutamente a ottenere, il potere di oggi, cioè il potere della civiltà dei consumi, invece riesce ad ottenere perfettamente, distruggendo le varie realtà particolari, togliendo realtà ai vari modi di essere uomini che l’Italia ha prodotto in modo storicamente molto differenziato. E allora questa acculturazione sta distruggendo, in realtà, l'Italia; allora posso dire senz'altro che il vero fascismo è proprio questo potere della civiltà dei consumi che sta distruggendo l'Italia. E questa cosa è avvenuta talmente rapidamente che, in fondo, non ce ne siamo resi conto, è avvenuto tutto in questi ultimi cinque, sei, sette, dieci anni. È stato una specie di incubo, in cui abbiamo visto l'Italia intorno a noi distruggersi e sparire.

    Adesso, risvegliandoci forse da questo incubo e guardandoci intorno, ci accorgiamo che non c'è più niente da fare.




    ENGLISH TRANSLATION

    Now we find ourselves in front of the structure, the shape, the profile of another city bathed in a sort of grey lagoon light, although surrounded by a beautiful Mediterranean maquis. This is Sabaudia. I can’t tell you how much we intellectuals laughed about the architecture of the regime, about cities like Sabaudia. But now, observing this city closely, we feel something totally unexpected. There is nothing unreal or ridiculous about Sabaudia’s architecture. With the passing of the years, this lictorian architectural style has become the meeting point between metaphysical and realistic linked feelings. On the one hand, it evokes metaphysic related feelings in the most genuine European meaning of the word ‘metaphysic’ because it reminds us, for example, of De Chirico’s metaphysical painting. On the other hand, it evokes realistic related feelings because you can see even from a distance that these cities are truly suitable for human beings. One feels that there live regular families, human beings, complete living beings who are fully immersed in their umility.

    How did this almost miraculous fact happen? How come that a ridiculous, fascist city suddenly seems to be charming?

    We must examine this case a little more closely: there is no doubt that Sabaudia has been created by the regime, but actually there is nothing fascist about this city, apart from some external aspects. Therefore, I say that fascism, the fascist regime, was nothing else than a group of criminals who came to power. It wasn’t able to do anything, neither to affect the Italian reality, nor to scratch its surface. Therefore Sabaudia, although arranged in a rationalistic, aesthetising, academic way, is not rooted in the fascist regime by which it was created, but rather it is rooted in the Italian provincial reality that has been tirannically dominated and never conquered by fascism. In other words, it was the provincial, rustic and paleo-industrial Italian reality that created Sabaudia, and not fascism.

    Now, instead, the opposite is the case. The regime is a democratic one, but fascism was unable to obtain both acculturation and homologation that today’s consumer society succeeds in obtaining by destroying the several micro-realities that made up Italian society in the past. This acculturation is actually destroying Italy. Therefore, I can state with absolute certainty that the true fascism consists in the power of today’s consumer society, which is destroying Italy. This happened so fast that we basically did not realise it. Everything happened in the last five, six, seven, ten years. It has been a kind of nightmare, in which we saw Italy around us destroying itself and then disappear.

    And now, perhaps awakening from this nightmare and looking around us, we realise that there’s nothing to do.
