Ypg/ypj
Just want to know your opinion on them, I'm a bit behind on the times (been reading a lot of books instead).
- Yay or Nay?
- Briefly describe what they have done?
- What is their political standpoint?
I already know a few minor details about them but lack knowledge on what they have done so far.

They are the syrian offshoot of the turkish-kurdish PKK, originally a marxist-leninist natlib organisation, now in transition towards an more libertarian-socialist theory and praxis.
I have an moderately positve view of the organisation ( i know some people who where active in the PKK) but im sceptic about some stuff as well and down right oppose some other choices they made, but they are the best dog in a very nasty fight.

I agree with what there doing for sure. I don't know anyone in the YPG/YPJ but i have known some Kurdish people who had relatives/friends in the PKK and i have always supported their fight against Imperialist Turkey as well as the other countries in that region. The Kurds are some of the most downtrodden people in the middle east and they deserve the right to self determination instead of being ruled by a far right government who has a policy of official repression against the Kurdish people.
While i am not usually a fan of Libertarian Socialism i think the version they are transitioning to could work for Kurdistan. Certainly at the moment they are the only group in that region that has shown that they are more then capable of beating ISIS. ISIS also seems to suck bad when it comes to fighting the guerrilla warfare used by the YPG/YPJ which shows they indeed have a weak spot. Hell the only group ISIS have beaten in battle so far are the Iraqi army who cut and run which is not much of a fight to say the least.
I don't agree with everything the YPG/YPJ are doing or all of their ideals but they are by far the most successful Socialist group to come around in a long time.
At a first glance, the YPG/YPJ seems like the most humane faction in the madness that is dominating the Middle East. They fight against the genocidal fanaticism of ISIS and from what VICE and their platform showed us, they seem to be a multi-ethnic force that is passionately trying to bring forth a revolution in the chaos.
However, this is not the case at all and leftists should stop romanticizing the Kurdish forces. There have been cases of torture, political killings, destruction of political freedom, recruitment of children in the police and armies, show trials, and the killing of protesters. Yes war is cruel and to expect humanity in what is the antithesis of humanity is outright naive, but to ignore these atrocities is outright hypocritical.
On top of that, there have even been allegations of ethnic cleansing of Sunni Arabs, Turkmen, and Assyrians by Kurdish forces from many Arab and Turkish sources. The validity of these sources are not airtight and there is almost no moral conscious to prevent people from spreading propaganda, but it would not be the first time this kind of activity has been practiced by self-proclaimed leftists.

I still support the YPG and PKK and hope that they can establish a homeland for themselves, but it pains me to no end when these allegations keep coming up over and over again.

Yeah i don't much care for the Liberals and even some Conservatives who are now all for the YPG/YPJ and are also in favor of taking the PKK off the terrorist group list all because the Kurds are the only fighters over there who are able to take on ISIS and win. Some of them don't even know that the YPG/YPG are Socialists ffs. Their only understanding of the conflict over there is from sources like Vice and other mainstream media outlets. Now i certainly can't fault the Kurds for effectively using propaganda as any group with any sense would do that.
But as you pointed out the YPG/YPJ are not exactly saints and as it's a warzone most people aren't going to get any kind of trial before being executed. So of course those type of killings are going to happen. As for the claims of ethnic cleansing i have my doubts that any of that occurred. This isn't to say that the YPG didn't target Sunni`s who they thought where ISIS members or sympathizers but i can't see them engaging in ethnic cleansing as not only would it accomplish nothing but piss off the other ethnic groups in the area but it would look very very bad to say the least once the media got ahold of it which is inevitable these days.
