    Default Fucking freeman-on-the-land B.S.

Figured this is the best place to put this.

Has anyone come across this crap before? For those that haven't it's some belief originating in the US but has followers in Canada, the UK and Ireland, that emerged from conspiracy theorist shite. They think they can get around legislation in common law jurisdictions. They believe that statute law is a contract and that maritime law governs the land and they can thus opt out of being governed through legislation based on fundamentally faulty interpretations and nautical-sounding words.

As someone who's spent a lot of time over the past few years giving legal advise around benefits (not a legal expert i just fucking hate the DWP with a passion!) this shit is dangerous! Every court considers it bullshit and anyone trying this crap runs a massive risk of contempt of court.

In a way it's kind of interesting because they take the social contract as literal believing they can opt out of it.

You can scower this badly done website if you want http://www.fmotl.com/

The guardian had an article on them to do with avoiding debt a few years ago: http://www.theguardian.com/commentis...gy-bullet-debt

There's also this court decision by a canadian judge destroying their arguments http://www.canlii.org/en/ab/abqb/doc...12abqb571.html

It's apparently linked to the 'sovereign citizen' shit in the US but less obsessed with guns.

I know someone who used to be well into this shit. It's interesting watching their political trajectory - largely, they have similar enemies to the left, capitalists / big businesses of all stripes. But the green industry is considered to be a 'way of controlling everyone so we don't have cars', they tie their politics into a lovely ourobouros of shit with MRA views on sex / gender, almost always have ridiculous nationalist politics (my example is not racist in the typical sense, but racist in the practical sense), generally, they are extreme reactionaries.

They go from Icke, to Beck, to Jones, swapping bizzarre ideologue for nationalist demagogue. Say what you like about the revolutionary left, some of us are a few biscuits short of a tin, but we tend to be a lot more realistic. These folks live in some kind of Tom Clancy snuff video.

Admittedly, I don't know a great deal about it as it's always been broached to me when my patience has worn thin, but as the OP states, it seems to be extremely legally tenuous and quite frankly childish and naieve. The current it swims in is tainted with reactionary pish.

Couldn't agree more. The link i gave from a canadian judge is about some guy that doesn't want to pay any damn child support. Trying to pay it with a birth certificate

    Complete and utter dickheads.

It's kinda bad though as i've come across people spouting this shit at unemployed people when they're having problems around their benefits. It'sd gonna result in someone clutching at straws as their solution and then get fucked over for having no leg to stand on.
