Iceland, the small island nation situated in the middle of the north atlantic ocean, boosts a population of only 280 thousand people, the island sits on natural thermal deposits with geisers, it is a natural hotspot of thermal activity, The icelanders have already developed a plant to distribute hotwater into homes to be used as heat, and a working on developing hydrogen as an alternative energy, powering everything from cars to boats! It is the goal of Iceland to be the first nation to become independant of fossil fuels!
What do you folks think about alternative engery, and the benefits for the future of our planet?

i'm pretty sure iceland is already using hydrogen in its public transport? pretty sure.
new zealand already has a functioning geothermal power station. though i know very little about the enviromental ramifications of this operation.
its gotta be better than coal though!

Geothermal energy is perhaps the most desirable type of energy there is. It is cheap to collect, enviromentally friendly, its there 24/7, and you don't need much expensive equiptment to harvest it. The only problem is there aren't enough geothermal vents. Geothermal energy is great for Icelanders, but for everyone else will have to find another solution. There are usually geothermal vents in areas of volcanic activity. It would be highly likely that geothermal vents could be used in New Zealand, but with a population such as theirs, I doubt it could fill much of their energy requirements.

That's correct, I believe most of their bus routes now run on hydrogen - or at least an increasing amount of them
one way to reduce oil consumption would be to stop making 4 litre v8 engines and start following Jap styled 1-2 litre straight 4-6 like the EVO, or V-Tec like the hondas

They are incredibly well-situated for energy independence, too. All that geothermal, and ocean currents too. There are some Icelanders that actually just pipe hot spring water into their houses for bathing and whatever. I could actually see building an Earthship there, which would be really sweet.

That would be 99.9%, the only ones that use anything other than thermal hot water for heating up the house or bathing are those living temporarily in shacks or something.
Seriously, no one uses anything to warm up their houses or their water - except thermal. There is not a single coal or oil burning plant, all their power comes from harnessing running water.
So there is no icelander using oil or coal for either heating, bathing OR electricity. That's why you can still drink out of the rivers, the running streams are cleaner than tapwater in most countries.
