Help! My friend today told me he was a "National Socialist", I think he has spent too much time on /pol/ on 4chan (not even a little joking). What can I do to convince him otherwise? By the way last month he was an "Individualist Anarchist". He told me the holocaust was exaggerated and that killing jews was a misstep.

Given that your "friend" is quickly moving through completely antithetical political positions, he will realize soon enough that fascists (and 4chan idiots) are assholes. If not, don't be friends.

The advice column I linked here is someone writing in about how their friend being a bigot and what to do about it, which is pretty much the same boat you're in. And I'm posting it because I've found that the direct, not-so-angry route usually works best, i.e. telling your friend that you're disappointed in them, how awful they sound saying ignorant shit, and how you know they're better than that, as opposed to attacking them verbally. I'd drop the dude, though, if he's gonna just wallow in his ignorance like this. You say he's a "nice dude" but someone can only be so "nice" when they're a fascist -- like how "nice" people who are rude to wait staff aren't really "nice".

I had a friend all through high school who I thought was decent but then he turned into one of those EDL nationalist types so we naturally grew apart.

I don't mean preach at you, but I personally couldn't hang around with somebody who had such reactionary far-right views.

He's obviously trying out several viewpoints and people's reactions to them, given that a month ago he was an anarchist. If you make it look like it's a big deal that he's a Nazi, that may be playing into it. Instead, try to ignore it for a while, pretend that you don't care at all. Make sure that he doesn't get any attention.

If it continues then you need to probe him. Why is he a Nazi? What emotional and psychological needs does he fulfill with that? What are his ultimate political goals? He won't answer these questions directly, you have to check around.

Usually with Nazis of the style you described it is not about a real political goal - it is more about fulfilling personal needs and a lifestyle. He feels he 'belongs' there. The particular ideology, Nazism in this case, is not relevant: anything could be filling these needs - Marxism, anarchism, etc. He probably needs to feel like an intellectual, or "different". You need to make sure that you aren't confirming, playing right into what he wants by being a Nazi.

Try argumenting about whether Nazism truly fulfils its positive ideals (e.g. achieving the common good for the nation). Try attracting him to left-wing nationalism or other such ideas.

Well hes not a skinhead, actually hes kind of a nerdy hippie. I dont see his beliefs becoming problems in everyday life, like he doesn't not talk to black kids or anything like that. I think hes just a 4chan Nazi who has fallen too deep into the /pol/ shit posting. Yeah, you're better ignoring him and letting the relationship grow apart with these types. I've tried, it can hurt you in the long run to be around bigoted morons.
