Songs you hate to love
Just what it says on the can. Songs that have either insipid or reactionary subject matter that are, at the same time, unfortunate earworms. My own recent addition to a depressingly long list is '60s white R&B artist Lou Christie's 1966 number one hit, "Lightnin' Strikes". The basic message from the song's narrator to his girlfriend is "Wait for me to fool around with a ton of other girls. Be chaste and virginal. When I'm done with my conquest of the opposite gender, maybe I'll return; we can get married and you can wait on me hand and foot into my old age." Despicable yes, oh, but that horn line and rhythm!
It pisses me off to no end; the message is the epitome of male entitlement, yet it hasn't left my brain all day.
"If you're feeling low, stuck in some bardo
I, even I know the solution
Love, music, wine and revolution."
