Were Anarchists Against the Wall a part of this? They are the only far left group that I personally am familiar with inside of Israel, but they're pretty badass from what I've seen of their actions.

The anarchist scene in Israel is really tight-knit so probably there is lots of overlap. The people I know at AATW also had plenty of run ins with the group that would later be infamous for becoming blood&honour tel Aviv.

I don't mean to speak off-topic, but can you elaborate on this?Originally Posted by Sasha![]()

Because of the silly "right of return" laws in israel its really easy for anyone that can vaguely claim some jewish heritage to get a citizenship in israel, during the economic crisis in russia in the 90's many christian orthodox russians suddenly discovered they where jewish (and in some cases faked the evidence) to be able to move to israel. Ironically many of their kids where hanging out in fash circles and these kids took their neo-nazi politics and subcultulture along to tel aviv. It was known for a long time among the radical left there who often had violent run ins with them but became a huge media and political scandal later when the media finally started reporting on thugs with neo-nazi tattoos desecrating synagogues while holding israeli passports.

Yeah Patrol 36. Were active in Russian communities in Petach Tikva. They were a relatively small group though. A dozen or so.
The real problem is the thorough anti-semitist sentiments within the Russian community itself. Most of them are Russian Orthodox and have no knowledge and understanding of Judaism.
End theocracy. If Israel stops being a theocracy then I will support Israel. There cannot be a Jewish state, or a Christian state, or a Muslim state. All theocracies are anti-Freedom of choice and anti-Democratic. Jews have the right to dwell in Israel just as everyone has the right to live wherever they want. However I cannot look at Israel positively until theocracy is abolished there. Israel is a dictatorship, all theocracies are by definition.
Cheers to left-wing brothers in Israel.
Israel isnt a theocracy in any shape or form, its an parlaimentairy democracy with an constitutional religion just as many other countries all over the world do.
Obviously in practise they have lots of official and unofficial policies that favour people of jewish decent (or to be more specific askenazi decent as arab and ethopian jews are severly discriminated too as are to lesser exent spanish jews) but one can reasonably say that thats more "racial" dominance than religious as many israeli jews (esp of russian decent) are non-religious/secular.
Fact is anyway that rabbi's have no official position on non-religious state affairs outside their ties to religious parties (which we here in the netherlands have plenty of too, and lets be honest defacto in the US too where the christian-right is very dominant in the GOP)

Yeah, the Soviet Union and its "nationality column" in its passports did quite a lot to shift the Jewish identity stuff towards the ethnic in Eastern Europe and Israel. I've noticed that it can be quite jarring to people from the American continent.
Thus, Israel is more of an ethnocracy than theocracy.
That's even worse than a theocracy.
I thought the Rabbis had a lot of power there. Anyways I think having a constitutional religion is offensive to anyone who isn't religious or has a different belief system in Israel. That's not as bad as a theocracy, but it's still screwed up. That's a problem with the U.S. too. I think the whole idea of a Jewish state is effed up, sounds supremacist. Or a Christian state or whatever.
obviously some have lots of social power by their hold over certain voter blocks, esp the ultra-orthodox. which can translate into political power as israel is always ruled by coalition governments in which the secular parties have, until recently always been disproportionally dependent on the (often minuscule) orthodox and settler parties.
but in general one can say that the old saying "where you have 2 rabbi's you'll have at least 3 opinions" is still very valid, its not an centralized religion.
israel technically doesnt have an constitution but their basic laws, while calling israel a jewish state recognize the freedom of religion and recognizes 5 abrahamic religions as equal.
and like said "jewish" israel, while identifying as cultural or ethnic jewish, already for almost 50% identifies in census as secular and over 30% as atheist.
this is a reason why the extreme-right groups the OP article is about are mostly anti-mysogination groups (organisations against inter-racial relationships) that while mostly focusing on Ashkenazim-muslim Arab mixing also objects to relationships between Ashkenazim and jewish arabs and with Ethiopian jews.

sure, but we in the Netherlands also have a state religion (calvinist sub sect so much) and while they are occasionally moaning that the king doesnt mention god enough and want to keep the mention of god on our coins everybody ignores them outside their bible belt ghetto's (pun intended)

It's the same here in the U.S. lol. Anyways religion just shouldn't have anything to do with government.
True. The theocratic elements of the Israel state are relatively harmless taken in abstract, they are poisonous because they a part of wider ethnic suprematism that goes on in Israel (some groups of Israeli Jews tend to be both rather fiercely secular and fiercely anti-Palestinian).
Well, end all nation states, say we anarchists

Suppose a large group of people decide they *want* to live in a theocracy, and somehow manage to get a piece of land for themselves halfway around the world from you. Are you going to tell they can't do that, and be willing to back it up with force? If so, from where do you get your justification for such "puritanism", beyond "might is right"? This, for me, is the puzzle of evangelical leftism that I'm hoping someone here can help me unravel...
Similar to questions about slavery and S&M I think. If people volunteer to be called "slaves" or freely go into an S&M relationship, that's fine. However, if any part of that relationship becomes forced, then it is no longer fine.
Likewise, if you want to follow whatever cultural customs yourself (wear a burqa, wear a bikini), that's fine. If you try to force them on others, it's not fine.

This is where many of the left in the US need to observe and learn. If our forefathers hadn't picked up guns, we would still be under Britain's thumb, although some would argue that we may still be under their thumb anyway in many respects.
