Well, this won't exactly provoke serious discussion. It's more of a "Help!" thread.
I'm wondering if any of you happen to know anything about growing seeds (no, not that kind :P). I have a kind of fruit seed that I brought back from Belize, and have been furiously trying to grow for too long. The outside of it is naturally hard, and there are ways to grow it, ways that I don't know of.
So I doubt that I'll get much help on this, but if any of you happen to know anything about growing seeds, I'm desperate for help.
The plant, by the way, goes by the scientific name Bactris Major. It has different names everywhere, so I'll just stay with the scientific one. It grows quickly (once it has sprouted), and has a delicious sour pulpy fruit.
Thanks to anyone who takes the time to read this...

First thought. How big is this seed? Is it less than a 1mm or 2mm in diameter? If this is the case, from experience, the best way to sprout any kind of see of this size, is to
-wet a paper towel (not extremely wet, just get it most enough),
-fold the paper towel into fours, stick the seed inside the towel.
-Then take a small tupperware/plastic container (don't use a plastic bag, and try to use something to only ----allow partial light, this is why a small tuperware with a translucent container and a solid colored lid work best) and stick the paper towel w/ seed inside the tupperware.
-Depending on the type of seed, it should sprout within a week, maybe even over night
-Keep the lid partially closed overnight, closed during the day
Trust me, this works sprouting seeds.
Thanks, AQ!
I'm going to go try that now.
Another important thing - the plant is a palm, meaning that the seeds are like miniature coconuts encased in a hard shell. Should I crack the shell before trying to grow the seed in a wet paper towel?
Now that I do not know. Many seeds I have planted have been very hard, however nature takes it course and they crack on their own in the paper towel.. I wouldn't think that cracking it need be necessary because in nature they must grow without being cracked.
However I am not one hundred percent positive for I do not know for that kind of plant. I would try some research. However my best bet is that it will crack on its own. Exactly what are the dimensions of the seed though? If it is less than 2mm, I would just put it in a paper towel
I'll have to check - I'm not at home anymore. I'd say that the seeds are 2mm at the least. They're a bit bigger than the average seed.
I have both kinds sitting in my window at home, though - one seed with the shell removed, and one with the shell still encasing it. I'll just see what happens...
I have absolutley no idea when it comes to garden and what not, the only experirence i have is that i grew Cress, an apple tree and a sun flower when i was a kid, no were particularly successful.
However what i would do is plant it normaly - in its hard shell, and if nothing happens after a while crack it open and try again, im guessing youve got more than one of these seeds?

I know a little about gardening, but not for tropical seeds. I'd say just stick it about 2 inches down in some nice potting soil and water daily, making sure it gets lots of sun. if that doesn't work, try something else.

Ortega, if you every get back to reading this.. Let me know which seed sprouted, if both, one, or any
So far, no luck.
This is very strange...![]()
What seems strange? Exactly how long have they been sitting there? Like I said, some seeds (especially because this one is larger) can take up to a week+. I would try moistening a new towel, and placing the seed inside of this new tool. This way incase the water has evaporated/and or get fresh water.
Also, where exactly did you get the seeds? A common thing that happens to me while trying to sprout the seeds is that not all seeds will grow. Roughly half of the seeds I try and sprout grow. I wouldn't give up. Seeds can take a while. It should work out.
Smoking these?
They are Palms, after all.
EDIT: My seed without a shell appears to have mold of some sort on it. Is that... normal?
find ouit what the acidity of the soil that it would nomally grow in (but you don't need to get this specific, lol)
you can add some furtilizer to the soil....
But one piece of advice that I'll share with you..... plant the seed with the pointy end down (assuming that it has a pointy end) maybe this is just myth, but that's where the root sprouts form (or something like that)
That's how I plant my seeds anyway. And I have a lot of illegitimate plant babies in Nova Scotia![]()
