From snopes.com:
tl;dr: The photos are from the 2009 recession when car sales worldwide were at an all time low. Parking vast barages of cars in open areas is a actually a common storage practice amongst car manufacturers until the cars are ready to be shipped out to dealerships. They are not parked out there to rust.

Not allowed to post links yet. But there is an article at jalopnik.com titled; that zero hedge article on unsold cars is bullshit. It's worth looking up for another perspective.
this... is..... mental.
I mean even by capitalist standards; just letting them rust rather than selling them at a major discount to cover some of the cost. where's the profit motive? what self-respecting Gordon Gecko wannabe would let this mountain go unsold? it's just bizarre.
If they were to do that then the market price for cars would drop and i guess they want to maintain the prices artificially high.
Apparently in Brazil there are around 400,000 unsold cars sitting there doing fuck all and I've driven past the Avonmouth area on my way to Bristol and seen the vast number of cars just sitting there. This is the complete irrationality of capitalist production given form.

You mean this one?
While cars do degrade with time, they're also far from perishable goods. They can be stored outside for months at a time and still be fine afterwards, especially when they've got hardly any miles on the clock..
Wasteful production does happen under the capitalist price system, but it seems to happen more with perishable goods that aren't easily stored long term (cf wine lakes and butter mountains).

Aha thanks for clearing that up people. Still, the fact that it got this bad even during the recession in 2009 is pretty damn bad.
