Default Dimitris Koutsoumpas with the President of the Council of Europe, Anne Brasseur

The GS of the CC of the KKE, Dimitris Koutsoumpas, met the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Anne Brasseur, on Wednesday 7th of May at the offices of the KKE in Parliament in the framework of her official visit.

Dimitris Koutsoumpas during the meeting submitted a petition which highlights that the equation of communism with fascism-Nazism and the bans on the activity of the communist parties, as a European direction, are contributing to the rise of fascism in many European countries.

Brasseur stressed the need to confront fascism, in the framework of the Council of Europe, regardless of political differences.

Below is the full text of the petition that the GS of the CC of the KKE, Dimitris Koutsoumpas, submitted:

    “TO THE PRESIDENT
    OF THE PARLIAMENTARY ASSEMBLY
    OF THE COUNCIL OF EUROPE
    Anne Brasseur

A systematic and multifaceted offensive against the communist and workers’ parties has been unfolding in Europe in recent years. The impetus for this development was provided by the well-known “anti-communism memorandum” of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (since 2006) with the title “Need for international condemnation of crimes of totalitarian communist regimes”.

There followed similar initiatives on the part of the EU, like the Commission’s report entitled “The memory of crimes committed by totalitarian regimes in Europe”, where communism is also identified with fascism/Nazism in an unacceptable manner. The EU, in this direction, has instituted the 23rd of August as a day of memory of the victims of “totalitarian regimes”, equating socialism with Nazism.

As a result of this development, the outlawing of the activity of communist parties, or the outlawing of the dissemination of the communist ideals or the outlawing of the use of communist symbols, or other anti-communist regulations and restrictions on activity have been imposed in many European countries that participate in the Council of Europe, such as: Georgia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and the Czech Republic.

On the occasion of your visit to Greece, we express our opposition to the aforementioned repressive measures at the expense of the communist parties. This situation insults the memory of millions of communists, who were at the head of the fight against fascism, and many of them also gave their lives for the social and democratic rights of the peoples. In addition, it leads to the justification of fascist forces, which are today rearing their heads, as we can witness very characteristically in Ukraine. The activity of these forces there, which are supported by the USA and the EU in their tough competition with Russia, is creating enormous numbers of dead and is threatening to lead Ukraine and the whole world to new bloodletting on a vast scale.

We would like to express on this occasion that we consider the recent decision of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe to temporarily expel Russia from its composition, as a reprisal for its stance in the Crimea, is adding fuel to the fire which has been lit.

Finally, we demand through this petition of ours the abolition of every repressive measures of prohibition that has been taken at the expense of the Communist and Workers’ Parties.

    COMMUNIST PARTY OF GREECE”

Now, I fully understand when reactionary bourgeois leaderships and organizations equate socialism with fascism. What pisses me off is having to read or hear it from fellow revolutionaries.
