Ridiculous, sure... But tips on getting work far away from where you live?

So, I'm pretty down and out on this whole California thing and for a few years I've been contemplating finding some job somewhere far away for a while.


Alaska was one of those places, and I've been looking into it and it is fucking expensive to live there. Not to mention the jobs I'd want sometimes require the experience of just living in the place apparently for a few years.

There were some vaguely interesting jobs on the Arctic Slope by the Arctic Slope Regional Corporation (there is a position for road and infrastructure maintainence that requires 2 years of Arctic Slope experience, whatever that means. I might send them an email), and some warehouse stuff down in Kodiak and so on... IDK where to start but I want to get the fuck out of dodge. And I'm not dead set on Alaska or anything, but I've been there before and loved it so it was an idea. I'm not even committed to this yet, but I'm looking around now.

I know some people on here have done this stuff before so any tips would be great.

I live in Alaska. Native of Kodiak, currently living in the interior. Your best bet as far as work goes as a complete newcomer to the state would probably be work in a cannery. Either that or fisheries work, but that's a little harder to come by. If you come up to work in a cannery it's pretty much a guaranteed job.

The work is kind of hellish, though. Long hours, monotonous labor, only make good money with overtime, etc.

You won't get work on the slope in any sort of trade work (pipe fitter, welder, electrician etc) unless you have the credentials and experience and you'd need to join the union, whatever union that may be. Your best bet would probably be to come up to Kodiak and pound the docks asking for work. You can sleep in the homeless shelter, that's what a lot of up-and-comers who are new to "the rock" do, heh heh.

Yeah, as for trade work, I've been trying to get into pipefitting/welding out here but theres no work to even get started with. Things might change in a few months...


I'll look into the canneries. Or at least keep them in mind.
