I live in Alaska. Native of Kodiak, currently living in the interior. Your best bet as far as work goes as a complete newcomer to the state would probably be work in a cannery. Either that or fisheries work, but that's a little harder to come by. If you come up to work in a cannery it's pretty much a guaranteed job.
The work is kind of hellish, though. Long hours, monotonous labor, only make good money with overtime, etc.
You won't get work on the slope in any sort of trade work (pipe fitter, welder, electrician etc) unless you have the credentials and experience and you'd need to join the union, whatever union that may be. Your best bet would probably be to come up to Kodiak and pound the docks asking for work. You can sleep in the homeless shelter, that's what a lot of up-and-comers who are new to "the rock" do, heh heh.
