South Africa: Five miners killed in goldmine

The bodies of the last two miners trapped underground at Harmony Gold’s deepest mine, Kusasalethu, in Carletonville, South Africa were recovered today (Thursday 31 August). It brings the total number of fatalities to five.

Default Celebrating Victory on Labor Day

    Celebrating Victory on Labor Day

Sophorn Yang, president of the Cambodian Alliance of Trade Unions, with ILRF executive director Judy Gearhart at an International Women's Day rally.

    Dear Chris,

It’s with great pleasure that I write to you today to share a victory, just in time for Labor Day in the US and Canada. After two years of international campaign efforts, from workers in Southeast Asia factories to students at Ivy League universities, Nike has made a new groundbreaking commitment to independent monitoring. In 2015, Nike announced they would not allow independent factory monitor, the Worker Rights Consortium, into their factories. This week, however, Nike signed an agreement to not only facilitate entrance, but to use their economic leverage to help remediate issues identified in their supplier factories.

In my latest HuffPost blog, co-authored by Sarah Newell, we commend Nike’s renewed commitment and trace through the two years of activism it took to make this victory happen. Mostly, it took a refusal to give up. Factory workers at Hansae Vietnam Ltd refused to accept labor abuse and instead went on strike. Labor leaders from countries in Nike’s supply chain refused to allow the situation on the ground to be obscured by corporate rhetoric, and travelled to the US to speak to consumers about the exploitation they’ve experienced. Students stood up to their universities, in some cases enduring disciplinary consequences for their demonstrations in support of Nike workers.

Read and share the story of this trailblazing victory here.

Often, we write to you about tough situations. About human rights defenders who are imprisoned without committing a crime. About grassroots unions having their entire memberships laid off from their factory in retaliation. About mass mobilization of citizens forced into agricultural work.

Today we get to celebrate that while it may be difficult, global solidarity can truly bring about concrete change. Workers organizing in the global south deserve our support and solidarity, and when we combine our efforts and voices, corporations can’t afford to not listen.

That’s the spirit I’m holding in my heart on this Labor Day 2017: that when we fight, we win.

Don’t forget to share this story far and wide today!

    Adelante! Onwards!

    Judy Gearhart
    Executive Director
