So today I was at a meeting and the speaker was talking about reactionary politics in the working class.
Although his overall presentation was quite good it had in my opinion a critical error. He mentioned education as the prime problem of the working class to realizing why they are frustrated and I do agree with him in that point.
I work with a lot of immigrants and I realize it's a system that pushes people from their countries and uses/abuses them in the new one. I realize that because people can be exploited others in their native land are left with lower wages and or loss of work.
But there is something very real in the frustration of taking home a smaller paycheck. There is something very hard about stressing over bills and all the hills that go with being a self-supporting person.
I think a lot of the time in the left we simply demonize reactionary politics and or the peasent/working class that often fall to them out of ignorance but are we really pushing the initiatives/education programs, work options, etc that could help make it so that easy switch to being a bigot and full of hate isn't the first move out of frustration.
I want to be clear that I am giving no credence to that choice a man or woman makes but I think we have to understand with a bit more empathy and understanding what it's like to be there and how hard it is to stay out of that trap.
