pro "black pete" demonstration turned in an orgy of racism
So people might be aware of our ridiculously racist blackface tradition called black Pete;

This year the discussion finally made a huge break through bringing the obvious racism to attention.
The racist masses went in full backclash mode, creating an "non racist honestly" Facebook petition that got over an million likes in a matter of days. Anyone putting the finger on the very racist discour is being told "to fuck off back where they came from"
Yesterday, during an demonstration, these "likes" where given to an PVV pairlametarian (surprise!), an elderly black woman was assaulted and bombarded with racial abuse and afterwards some of the many neo-nazi activists in attendance went to the the Greek embassy to show their support for the goldendawn party.

This discussion about black pete is really turning ugly. I'm stunned by how many people i know liked the "pietitie". Some pro-pete people seem to think the aim is to get rid of zwarte piet altogether, but the aim of the "black pete is racism" movement was always to modify black pete so that it no longer is a racist stereotype, other pro-pete people are just racists. If people are still in denial that racism is well alive in the Netherlands they just need to look at this discussion.

I'm going to hope that this quote does apply here. Because up to now the black pete discussion has followed this path.
There are some people where I am who are continuously defending the names of locations in some of the states that are outright racist and are a remnant of the colonial era. Many indigenous rights groups have protested and gotten some of the names changed, but the bastards still exist.
Examples include 'Nigger Creek', 'Mount Niggerhead', 'Coon Island' and 'Black Gin Creek Road' ('Gin' was an old term for aboriginal women, giving the meaning that they were sexual toys to be used by rapist men - hence the name). I do not joke around when I say that these are real location names, and there are many more like them.
There are many more, and all the little anglo bogan shitheads come out screaming about tradition and history. Probably the same way confed nostalgists do.
That said, I don't think many would go as far as what the basket cases in the article are doing.

That's the fucked up thing, while the out racists and the PVV are now taking an run with it many of the people hyper defensive of the black Pete tradition really dont see themselves as racist. That's what makes it such an charged discussion to begin with. All white people (and many non-white too) have really warm, innocent, feelings from their youth for the whole sinterklaas thing. An critique of black Pete is felt as an personal attack on people's childhood and making them personally, and not just the tradition, racist. It took myself also a while to see it for what it is. It's difficult to explain, but I guess you also didn't grow up with knowing that Santa is a stupid, commercial, scheme by coca-cola. It takes some reevaluation of your childhood memories when you hear that. It's for non-dutch people, esp in countries like the US and UK that also used to have blackface traditions but already ended them obvious how racist black Pete is, here a lot of people really believe the, no he is vlack because he climbs through the chimneys BS.
This is the most important thing of this whole escalating discussion, it lays the massive unconsious racism in the Netherlands bare for all to see and making it impossible to ignore. But this is for many ppl a very, very painful process.

We have the 'golly' AKA 'gollywog' ('wog' being a racist term of abuse; 'golly' is supposed to be derived from 'dolly') in the UK. It hasn't been totally gotten rid of - though it seems the image actually came from America, originally. I still remember as a kid (not that long ago really) watching the 'Black and White Minstrel Show', where white entertainers would black up and do 'jolly negro' routines. It's only about 30 years ago that that was on prime-time publically-funded mainstream TV.
There's also a tradition of pubs called 'The Black Boy' - but in the 20th century, I guess most of these swapped the obviously racially-stereotypical images of African boys for those of boys who used to work as chimney-sweeps and in coal-mines in Victorian Britain, and were therefore 'black' because they were dirty.

Actually I think that with the names of British pubs that the 'Black Boy' in question was originally Charles II, so-called because of his swarthy complexion.
