I mean how do I 'install it' and does it wipe my hard drive? Can I use programs that I already have installed in it, ect ect stuff like that. I did try to read a faq once but left more confused than before

Hey pete, sorry for the late reply.
You will actually have to create a partition(if you don't want to wipe your drive) and install it there. a partition is a space on your harddrive(for example, some people have a c:, d:, e:, etc..drives on their machine).
Suse or Redhat will actually partition itself, but you have to tell it what area of your drive you want it to install on.
I think the best way to learn is to just install it yourself...there's a good chance you'll mess up(or go really slow), but you'll learn. As long as you point it to a safe area, it will not wipe out your harddrive and also the new linux distributions are pretty good with confirming every step(they tried their best to make the install easy for a regular user).
as for your programs that you already have installed, there is a good chance many of them will not work. As mentioned before linux is opensource, and any software that runs on linux the source code must be avaiable. If a company gave their source code away, then their compitition can see it and steal their idea's. Linux has alot of programs(for every program that windows has, linux has an equivient).
If you are using office stuff such as word, excel, etc.. Linux has a package called "open office" that has all that stuff and can read and write files in a way that it can work with microsoft office.
There is a program called "wine" i have not used it so i cannot say for 100% if its good or not, but its a windows emulator, so windows programs in theory should work on linux using that program. I haven't tested it though, but i heard ms office has worked perfectly on linux using that program.
serously..just pick a distro(i suggest suse9, since its geared more towards home users) and install away..if you can install windows then linux should not be that much trouble,..Most of their default settings are prety good(but watch out for the partitioning settings, you would have to change that setting and point it to where you want to install).
try to install it, and if you get stuck anywhere let me know.
p.s. i don't know if this fact makes socialists like linux less or not, but i just heard that america's missles in iraq are using linux.
