According to this page the Linux kernal has had an upgrade. http://kernel.org/ has more infomation on the specifics.

While I'm not about to upgrade (I'll wait until I get my computer), if your thinking about Linux when new distributions come out with the new kernal, go and get 'em.

i looked at its specs it doesn't seem to focus on performence...it seems to focus more on additional features on the kernel.

anyways, i can't wait to try it also...hopefully if i get time i will experiement with it a bit.

lol..actually in my opinion it won't make much of a difference.

the linux kernel is like the brain of the operating system. The linux brain has been upgraded.

from what i read, they were trying to improve multimedia when creating the new linux kernel. It has many new upgrades but the one that i was reading about was having to do with sound and making it possible to produce better sound and mixing capabilities. Unless your a music producer, its probally useless since linux can already play mp3's, dvd's, avi's, etc...thats usually enough for a regular user.

if you just getting into linux..i suggest suse linux 9 (http://www.suse.com/us/private/downl...t_mirrors.html) out of all of the linux's i find it one of the most user friendly and its pretty powerful.

although the new kernel has been tested for a long long time, don't expect many distrobutions of linux to use the new kernel just yet. Its different when developers and nerds are testing the kernel, but as soon as the general public starts using it, they'll probally find a few bugs(nothing major though).

if you have any questions, please feel free to ask

I mean how do I 'install it' and does it wipe my hard drive? Can I use programs that I already have installed in it, ect ect stuff like that. I did try to read a faq once but left more confused than before

Hey pete, sorry for the late reply.

You will actually have to create a partition(if you don't want to wipe your drive) and install it there. a partition is a space on your harddrive(for example, some people have a c:, d:, e:, etc..drives on their machine).

Suse or Redhat will actually partition itself, but you have to tell it what area of your drive you want it to install on.

I think the best way to learn is to just install it yourself...there's a good chance you'll mess up(or go really slow), but you'll learn. As long as you point it to a safe area, it will not wipe out your harddrive and also the new linux distributions are pretty good with confirming every step(they tried their best to make the install easy for a regular user).

as for your programs that you already have installed, there is a good chance many of them will not work. As mentioned before linux is opensource, and any software that runs on linux the source code must be avaiable. If a company gave their source code away, then their compitition can see it and steal their idea's. Linux has alot of programs(for every program that windows has, linux has an equivient).

If you are using office stuff such as word, excel, etc.. Linux has a package called "open office" that has all that stuff and can read and write files in a way that it can work with microsoft office.

There is a program called "wine" i have not used it so i cannot say for 100% if its good or not, but its a windows emulator, so windows programs in theory should work on linux using that program. I haven't tested it though, but i heard ms office has worked perfectly on linux using that program.

serously..just pick a distro(i suggest suse9, since its geared more towards home users) and install away..if you can install windows then linux should not be that much trouble,..Most of their default settings are prety good(but watch out for the partitioning settings, you would have to change that setting and point it to where you want to install).

try to install it, and if you get stuck anywhere let me know.

p.s. i don't know if this fact makes socialists like linux less or not, but i just heard that america's missles in iraq are using linux.

cool good luck with it. If you get stuck at any part let me know.

Don't worry too much about linux..i notice many people are scared and think its very complex. Although it can be made complex, the new distro's try to make it as simple as possible.

Here's some screen shots of KDE (the graphically interface for linux)
