Maoists accuse authorities of concocting the case over fallen hero Bo

    May 23, 2012

BEIJING: China's Maoists have rallied behind their fallen political hero, Bo Xilai, accusing the authorities of fabricating a case against him and exposing China to a risk of disintegration.

Six weeks after Mr Bo was suspended from the Politburo for ''serious discipline violations'', the leftist association Utopia sent a statement to global media defiantly calling for the former Communist Party boss of Chongqing city to be rehabilitated.

''Utopia believes Bo and Wang are the biggest cases of political injustice since opening and reform,'' said Utopia, referring to Mr Bo's former police chief, Wang Lijun, who apparently fled for his life to a US consulate and is likely to face treason charges soon. The Utopia website shut down after Mr Bo's downfall and was accused of slandering party leaders.

Advertisement: Story continues below The Utopia statement went on to blast authorities for ''evil measures'' including fabricating allegations of criminality and corruption against Mr Bo.

''Thus it might be used by the domestic traitorous forces who collaborate with Western hostile forces to foment social chaos, split China into pieces and bring it to the abyss!'' it said. ''Long live invisible Mao Zedong Thought; Long Live the Chongqing Road.''

Analysts believe China's leaders forged a consensus early last month to limit the fallout from Mr Bo's case, agreeing not to punish his political supporters and to steer clear of debate over the divisive ideology and policies he was seen to represent.

While many on the left of Chinese politics are angry at Mr Bo's fall, others on the right are disappointed that leaders have not taken the opportunity to resuscitate hopes of reform.

The strident call for reform made by the Premier, Wen Jiabao, on March 14 ''was followed by no one'', said Chen Ziming, an independent political analyst in Beijing.

''It's time for China to change but it hasn't for [a] long time. This is why China is called the Brezhnev era,'' he said, referring to the Soviet Union's long period of apparent stability and strength followed by collapse.

Officials alleged Mr Bo's wife, Gu Kailai, was involved in the murder of the Briton Neil Heywood following a dispute over money. Mr Bo is expected to distance himself from Ms Gu, after a strained relationship, but may be accused of covering up a murder.

This month a Japanese tabloid, Yukan Fuji, reported a highly unusual meeting between Mr Bo, in custody, and a business acquaintance, Keisuke Udagawa. It said the meeting occurred after investigators had asked Mr Udagawa to corroborate Mr Bo's claims about a strained marriage, including that he had discussed divorce in 2000.

Most outside observers have dismissed the Japanese report as a fabrication. However, a well-placed Chinese security official told the Herald yesterday that it was ''quite possible'' that Mr Udagawa had met Mr Bo to ''assist the investigation''.

Whether or not it is authentic, the report affirmed a belief among Mr Bo's supporters that he was a courageous martyr for the socialist cause.

''I cracked down hard on corruption and criminal practices while I was the party secretary of Chongqing, removing some city officials who were involved with criminal syndicates,'' Mr Bo reportedly told Mr Udagawa in the company of intelligence officials. ''Some people hated me for this. They used their remaining power to get back at me on account of my wife. I was framed.''

Indeed. Bo Xilai was incredibly rich and lived an affluent life. He embraced the current economic system but supported "red culture". He is not a leftist.

Didn't that guy run his own little gangster state in China for a while, in which he arrested a bunch of people (including political opponents) and basically beat confessions out of them?

If so, I could see why the Maoists would like him.

This is the same Bo Xilai that cracked down hard on the Communist Party of China (Maoist). You should look beyond his rhetoric. Maybe his fall can help break some illusions, eventually. Sadly nationalism and illusions in the CCP are still rife on the chinese left. If Bo Xilai is what passes as the CCP "left" this should perhaps also serve as a wake up call, not only to the left in china but also to the abroad backers of the chinese regime.

Bo Xilai's fall from power is a pretty significant political development in China as it apparently shows deep divisions between the left-wing and right-wing of China's political party. Bo's crackdown on organized crime in his city and his advocating of wealth redistribution made him very popular among the lower social classes. And it is speculated that perhaps due to Bo's growing influence that some of the more right-wing party members feel threaten by his rising status that they want to bring him down.

If that is true, then the right-wing members of China's political party might have scored a victory here. What this holds for China's future is unclear but if the right-wing party members get the upper hand, they might proceed with their program of full-scale privatization and to privatize the remaining state-owned enterprises. Which as a result, could accelerate the arrival of a social and economic crisis in China as most of the people of China are unhappy about the current economic policies.
