It's actually kind of cool walking in Berlin from west to east. Berlin's a very interesting city anyway, lot of history there.

The city I live in didn't look much better 20-25 years ago. There are still parts that look like chernobyl.

Sure, that Shell station and the part of the art being painted over are pretty bad, but fucking really? East Germany's buildings were crumbling anyway.
Someone takes a picture of refurbished housing in East Germany, and this proves that East Germany was a terrible place? Let me tell you, many of those places were far nicer than parts of my country. And I live in the richest country in the world.
Also, don't you think the German government would be inclined to make such radical changes in East Germany to quell those who want to return to Socialism?
The UN's 1986 Human Development Index listed East Germany at .953 and West Germany at .967. Guess what, West Germany was only minutely better in the '80s.
