Ok I'm from southern New Jersey and the people here are no more dehumanized by consumerism than anywhere else in the advanced capitalist world. (With the exception of the Guido shore subculture.)

New Jersey is quite large and large part of which consists of what is essentially a large portion of the New York City urban area, with everything from awful forlorn slums to disgusting rich brats in ugly mansions poorly imitating colonial architectural styles, so... you're asking for a equivalent of a nation/large region/cross-section of society?

I am sure that most of the Jersey people don't act like that. But unfortunately here in the Ol'wolverine state it's popular. They act like they do in the show and apparently it makes them "cool." They complain about everything like brats.

I really hate how so many people in this state think that because he was born here and lived here for a few years that he somehow has a connection to ordinary people. He's rich as fuck, and has absolutely no connection to the working people. It's beyond me how some people will gobble up his little anecdotes of being "just an ordinary guy".

I think that you are forgetting the core reason why Romney connects with the people of Michigan so well: It is because the trees are the right height. The trees being the right height supercedes the importance of the facts that thousands of people die every year from urban violence in Detriot and that Flint is still a hell-hole.
