I heard this a few years back on the radio i think, its insane. I suppose it could have a good benefit in terms of those people who are physically disabled, could be placed inside a fuly functioning body, though i guess they must be a bit tricky to come by.

Unfortunately, even if such a procedure were to be carried out successfully, you would be completely paralyzed. Nerve cells heal at an extremely slow rate, and it is highly unlikely that your brain would be able to make use of the nervous system of the host body. Though some patients who suffer nerve damage are able to recover some use of the affected portions, such rehabilitation takes years and is not always promising. It may take weeks for a person who has had a hand or finger reattached to move that extremity, and it make take years, if ever, for that person to develop any form of sensation from there. So at absolute best, the body might work for you in a few weeks, and if you are lucky, in a few years you might have some semblance of feeling, however, dont expect to be able to run a marathon or do gymnastics.

Head transplants are a pure capitalistic thing. Rich people would be able to afford them, even if they have just lost a finger. And poor people who have lost their legs and arms wont be able to afford them.

its an interesting idea for worker's comp, no?

anyway, for most cases of paralysis, it'd be useless. The spinal cord cannot be unattached from the brain without some severe damages, so you'd have to transplant the entire column for any semblance of success at all. Even then, people with damaged Basal Ganglias, which control muscular movement within the brain, would be just the same.

    WHAT ABOUT THAT POOR MONKEY!?
that is so fucking sick, any scientist experimenting dangerously on an animal SHOULD be tried for animal cruelty, its such a fucking disgrace to science and to the human race

I have to agree, a family member of mine is head of security at medical research lab that tests drugs on animals. He often has protesters throwing all sorts of abuse at him (telling him to die and calling him an evil fucking bastard are the more charming ones). I have to wonder however, if they would refuse treatment for cancer or any other major illness, or volunteer to experiment the drugs themselves??? I doubt it.

most animal rights activists are extremely serious/militant about the cause and i can bet that most would probably reject medicines. im a hardcore vegan and animal rights activist and refuse any type of medicine. i only use natural, homeopathic medicines. and many places do use humans for testing. i know for example that many universities are always asking for volunteers. i have considered volunteering for certain ones, but couldnt fit their time into my schedule (as i work and go to class).

Senora Che...You are crazy! Maybe instead of volunteering for some experimental medicine, you can try attending a mental health facility instead?

Of course I feel bad for that poor monkey. But humans arn't the only ones who benefit from animal research they do to.I mean as common a thing today as blood typing for transfusions was only realizedthrough experimenting on rhesus monkeys . That's what the RH factor stands for, (the +- on a,b,orO). So as sad as it is I feel the good probably outways the bad.

i have a friend thats hard core into saving the animals and protecting them against all kinds of horrible testing, and thats all fine and dandy i guess, but i mean really who is more important, the monkey or the man? i know ur all going to say that there is no reason the monkey is less important, but it is less important, it doesn't have the ability to reason, to create, its a monkey that was bread for research.

as for the whole head transplant, that just scares the shit out of me, if they could ever get that to work, think about all the rich bastards who would pay for ppl's bodies as a form of cosmetic surgery or to dump their bodily problems on some guy that really needs the money. i just know that the ppl that really needed the surgery for one reason or another wouldn't get it wether because they were too poor or just because they didn't know the right ppl. what science will bring in next, i do not know, but i hope its not nearly as scary.

Monkeys can do more than you think- they feel, they build amazing relationships, they protect each other, they have a community sense of life, etc.

And who cares if they dont have the so-called ability to reason- hell most humans dont have this ability (if they do they dont use it) but it doesnt mean we should go testing shit on them. And as for the creation part- thats crap because most humans arent creative at anything.

Also, the whole thing of testing things for humans on monkies, rabbits, mice, etc. is absurd. They may react drastically to something that may not work on humans, so you never really know the true effects. The only way to really know is to test on humans. For example, someone who has cancer or HIV is probably willing to participate that way they have their hands on the latest drugs.

Medical testing of this nature requires thousands, millions of animals, it is rediculous to try such experiments on humans, that is unnessary. Humans can not be subjected to the conditions that animals can be, unless you are willing to round up a few million people to be medical test subjects, from the time they were born till they die. Not that animal testing is good, its just the thought of abolishing it is totally impractical. Absolutely not.
