(Reuters) - Two Iranian naval ships have sailed through Egypt's Suez Canal into the Mediterranean, in a move likely to be keenly watched by Israel.

"Two Iranian ships crossed through the Suez Canal (on Thursday) following permission from the Egyptian armed forces," a source in the canal authority said Friday.

The destroyer and a supply ship could be on their way to the Syrian coast, the source added. Iran and Syria agreed to cooperate on naval training a year ago, and Tehran has no naval agreement with any other country in the region.

Two Iranian warships sailed along the strategic waterway on February 17 last year, in a move that Israel called a "provocation."

Syria and Iran are hostile to Israel.

Egypt's military, which has a close defense ties with the United States, has been governing the country since the overthrow of President Hosni Mubarak a year ago.

The Suez Canal cuts through Egypt and allows shipping to pass from the Middle East to Europe and vice versa, without going around southern Africa.

I am very skeptical until we get word from bigger news organizations, you know how it is with Iran we've had several unconfirmed (and later proved entirely wrong) articles about possible movement/attacks. If this is true however It will be interesting to see the U.S response to all of this, Im becoming concerned recent events will eventually lead to war and that I'm about old enough to be drafted.

This reminds of the stuff I read about the Gulf of Ton kin episode. A lot of chatter and press reports that angered the public into accepting aggressive and retaliatory action. Only to find out much later that it was based on lies.

i feel like moving warships around one of the most highly trafficked areas of the world is hard to make up

You won't be drafted. The bourgeoisie learned their lesson about to how to wage perpetual war without damaging public opinion much. The policy of neo-liberalism and capitalism in general does a good enough job of reducing people to poverty so that they feel they have no choice but to join the army. Particularly with tuition skyrocketing, a lot of people are joining the ROTC and other military programs. Even people that aren't even gung ho about US Imperialism will join the army if they feel that they won't be able to get a college degree otherwise..

One of my friends is trying to join the Navy and he has often mentioned the money...and he kind of acts like it's going to be a game of Call of Duty.

Really makes me wonder how many people join for the reason of "protecting freedom." Seems that most join for their own reasons (usually money, job, college, or they have no other choice) and eventually they believe that they did it to serve their country? Not to mention that much of the population seems to believes that every single person who joins the military did it for a "greater good." Meh..

Probably because "i did it for america" sounds better then "i did it to avoid working 3 jobs and sinking into debt" and because admitting that otherwise you would be up to your neck in debt is something few can bear they probably try to convince themselves that thats the reason why.
