Nice pictuers. When do we leave?

Actually, I'd rather stay on Earth if you don't mind...

Everyone else can bugger off into space and I'll have the planet to myself!!! Super!!! Unless anyone else wants to stay too?

    Wow.

    Nice.

    Cool.

You can have space; I shall remain here.

    1) How would we maintain the earth's gravity in space?

    2) Why!?

I have a feeling that money won't be much of an issue when construction of these things begins.

    1) How would we maintain the earth's gravity in space?
These colonies use centrifugal force to simulate gravity. They spin on an axis.

    2) Why!?
I was originally going to post this in the human extinction thread. Colonies like these could be a solution to overpopulation.

I'm afraid that the only realistic solution (such as it is) to over-population is the wide spread of safe and effective birth control (including abortion).

The effectiveness of this measure turns on the spread of education for women...it's a fact that the more educational opportunities for women emerge, the sharper the fall in the birth-rate.

If you start crunching the numbers of what it would take to left a significant portion of the Earth's present population into orbit...the numbers grow at an appalling rate.

Space colonies are the way to go for the human species, in my view...but only a very tiny number of earthlings will live in them. Probably less than 10,000.

Unless, of course, some completely unanticipated "break-through" makes orbital achievement "cheap" and "easy".

I would expect "space colonists" to be very rigorously screened, by the way. Only the very bright and very healthy need apply.

anyway, I have a Modest Proposal. I think we should solve the problems of overpopulation and famine by eating babies. 2 birds with one stone.

Well, it's getting a little crowded now... You'll have to settle for Africa i'm afraid. Or the antarctic? You choose!

(Eating babies? A little drastic... Maybe we should start executing people when they reach 30, that may work...)

A modest proposal, indeed. We should start with the Irish babies. Parents can be proud of having the most tender children. Mayhaps the Stalinists will help us on this one.

anyway, why would you assume that houses and stuff would look the same in space? I don't think they would. And what if a Gundam chops one up? Then your fucked.

This whole idea isn't really a solution, but its fun to thinka bout

I guess it wouldn't prevent human overpopulation, but it probably would perevent human extinction.

sometimes i think that the earth as a whole would be better off if homo sapiens sapiens just died off. But then again, that wouldn't be natural, since it is only natural for humans to inhabit the earth at the moment.

I feel these constructs would be more useful if they head a purpose; like they were heading on an inter-generational cruise to the nearest habitable star system.

These ships will provide as much an earth-like environment for the colonists and their children as they head toward their destination.

Ach, not a PROPER pine forest though... :P

No, you guys go ahead. I'm happy on Earth, really happy. It's just a shame that Humanity seems intent on destroying it. Eating babies may not be the solution either...

Travelling to the nearest inhabitable Star system would take eons. Especially with a ship that size; self-sustaining power would need to be developed first. And a way to live in harmony with the eco-system "onboard". Plus, the population would have to remain constant; and fed. And absolutely no Wars or conflicts would be allowed. Equality for all races and nations; no pesky class sytem either.

(But if all this came to pass, the Earth would be really groovy!! Why bugger off into space?? Just learn to live in peace here!&#33
