Is it sexist to address a group of people that includes both males and females by saying you guys?
    It depends.

I've known people to go both ways on the topic - some people get upset and others could care less. It's really become a part of everyday language so I wouldn't put to much thought into it.

This said, if you're concerned about demeaning women by referring to them as men, you could always say "folks" instead of "guys." I do this often - it's a good term.

If someone you regularly hang out with is severely offended by it I'd take August's advice but it is a ridiculously common phrase (way more so than sexist slurs, don't even start). I usually say something like 'folks' 'sup gang' 'you all' ' y'all' etc

No, it really doesnt. If some ridiculous person gets offended by it, thats unfortunate (mostly for them}, but there is nothing sexist about saying "you guys".

I say it all the time and never thought of it as being sexist. I don't know anyone who actually thinks it's sexist.

I am not really interested in debating whether or not it's actually sexist, as this is a useless discussion and generally only embarked upon by men who want to pontificate on something simple.

What I was saying, and what I felt my post conveyed pretty well, is that the question of whether or not it actually is a sexist statement is secondary to how it makes people feel.

Shouldn't this be moved to learning at the very least? (I'll give the benefit of the doubt that it was a sincere question and not a trollish attempt to start a shitstorm)

    1. Informal . a man or boy; fellow: He's a nice guy.
    2.
Usually, guys. Informal . persons of either sex; people: Could one of you guys help me with this?

Colloquial noun that has no political or philosophical (or for that matter sexist) denotations/connotations.

    yes and no.

It's sexist in the same way that referring to your brother and sister collectively as "hermanos" in Spanish is sexist. It's widely accepted, yet it still reinforces male superiority.

In short, try to avoid the phrase as much as possible, but don't put it too high on your list of priorities when it comes to confronting institutionalized sexism.

Wow, this forum gets some stupid threads once in a while.

No, guys in that context is a gender neutral term and includes both sexes. "They" is also used as a gender neutral pronoun when the sex of someone isn't known. It's frowned on, but it's used and will continue to be used.

But yeah, even a group composed of all girls can be called guys, at least where I'm from.

    Why?

Yeah, no kidding, considering that this sort of shit makes a complete mockery out of "confronting institutionalized sexism".

Have you ever referred to or heard someone else refer to a single woman as a guy, e.g. "that guy over there"? How about have you ever heard someone refer to a man as a guy?

Have you ever heard someone refer to a woman as a girl? How about have you ever heard someone refer to a man non-sarcastically as a girl?

    Why?
cause it reinforces patriarchy, see above as to why

get your head out of your ass, language plays a huge role in reinforcing social structures.
