Default Which languages do you speak?

    Just wondering

I can speak Russian and English fluently. I can also speak Spanish to an extent, not enough to hold debates, but if I get lost in a spanish speaking country I can certainly find my way around. I can understand Belarusian and Ukrainian pretty easily because they are similar to Russian. I can read Polish and understand it, but it is a bit harder with Czech. Anything from the Balkans looks like alien language though, the grammar looks the same but the words are completely different

I can only speak English. The only language even close to being my second language is French, and I can't even hold a basic conversation in that language, although I can read French much better than I can speak French - the same applies to many languages, which I can understand some of in text, but would have difficulty doing so in speech. I've tried learning various languages, including Esperanto, Swedish, Spanish and French, but I'm not very skilled at learning languages.

I can speak English as my first language, and I can speak a limited amount of French because we learned it in school, and I can speak some Russian but I think I can speak it better than I speak French because I've reached the point where I can vaguely understand what someone's talking about when they speak it.

I'm fluent in Spanish, intermediate in German, Swedish, Russian and Mandarin (those can be a bit rusty though). On Mandarin, I've stopped trying to learn the written language, I'm only interested in speaking and comprehension at this point.

I can speak English and rudimentary Spanish. I'm confident that if I lived in a spanish-speaking country for a period of time, I could become fluent or close to fluent.

I know how to say "sorry, I don't understand" in Serbo-Croat, too.

I don't think this is necessarily a failing on your part - I think this is a particular problem with the English education system. We are terrible at learning other languages - I too read French better than I speak it (though my accent is impeccable).

However, there are also accounts from the early Middle Ages saying that 1,200 years ago (or something) the English were rubbish at learning other languages. I suspect that when the Saxons arrived in Britain, the majority of Welsh-speakers just gave up and spoke English because it was easier than getting the Saxons to learn Welsh.

In answer to the OP, a little French, a little German, a little Latin (useful, huh?). I have an interest in philology, though, so I can sometimes understand the subject or general thrust of things in Welsh, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, Swedish and other languages related to the ones I know.

I speak English as my first language and have a fairly good grasp of French. I can understand quite a bit of German, but I can barely string a sentence together when I try to speak it.
"Her development, her freedom, her independence must come from and through herself. First, by asserting herself as a personality, and not as a sex commodity. Second, by refusing the right to anyone over her body; by refusing to bear children unless she wants them; by refusing to become a servant to God, the State, society, the husband, the family, etc. ... by freeing herself from the fear of public opinion and public condemnation. Only that, and not the ballot, will set woman free, will make her a force hitherto unknown in the world, a force for real love, for peace, for harmony; a force of divine fire, of life-giving; a creator of free men and women."

    I speak only English.

I can understand some Spanish if it's spoken very slowly. I use to be better at it. I spoke it somewhat broken, but understood quite well.

I am slightly picking up on French, as a lot of coworkers are from West Africa. I may delve into it more.

I was brought up to be fairly bilingual in English and Gaelic, though my Gaelic's underused and rather rusty these days. My Spanish isn't too bad, although I've plenty of room for improvement

English is the only language I'm fluent in, but I can get along using French, if I ever need to. My Russian isn't too great, but my Dutch is worse, considering I started less than a week ago on that.
