I know I there are probably better forums to ask this question, but I would like to hear from revleft and any Islamic socialists here.
Is Sharia law only state sponsored Islamic law or is it more of a personal moral code? Is a devout muslim following its teachings in a secular state following Sharia or is it considered something else in this situation?
I know most religions have their own "laws" that regulates behavior, such as no sex before marriage and you cant eat certain kinds of animals. When a religious person follows these laws when not imposed by the state they are following a moral code or law.
Is this what Sharia law is?

I always thought it came from the second Surah in the Koran called "The Cow" which primarily deals with law, wikipedia gives it a lot more sources than that though.

That's because sharia law is, in practice, largely based on other sources like historical sources on how the prophet behaved and what he said. The result of this is that sharia law is backward and oppressive which is why many muslims, like myself, are opposed to it.
Dude, you don't know what Fascism is. It is liberty!

It's an over-exaggerated Islamic law, not from the Muslims, but far-right anti-muslims. I've spoken to many Muslims who say that sharia law isn't always preferable. Sharia law has some good ideas, mainly to do with banks. That they're not allowed to profit, so if you see a sharia based bank, I'd recommend it. But, Muslims are taught in the Qu'ran to respect the laws of their host nation. So you don't need to worry about Muslims trying to impose it, only morons like Anjem Choudary go on about it. The rest of the Muslim population just get on with their lives abiding by the laws of their host nation and contribute a hell of a lot to it via becoming lawyers or police officers (This is obviously a non-ideological statement, not that I condone either groups).

"Sharia Law" is a buzzword that is used by western politicians to rile up the masses against the Arab people anytime an excuse for preemptive strike is needed.
