For those who are not aware this same ship fired a shot back in 1917 that gave the signal for the October revolution.
Now in 2011 again it is fired again.

Probably because the 7 Nov (the date of this stunt) is the anniversary of the October Revolution
March at the head of the ideas of your century and those ideas will follow and sustain you. March behind them and they will drag you along. March against them and they will overthrow you.

Why did they wait till November to do it
It's because at the time they followed the Julian calendar rather than the Gregorian calendar. The date of the revolution (Julian) was October 25th while the Gregorian date is Nov 7th.

Man Russia is crazy, you can just sneak aboard a warship and fire it's guns?

I think they probably fire it every now and again for ceremonial reasons though, which is why it appears to be still active. I agree that it was a cunning stunt.

An enjoyable prank -- but also demonstrates the difference between proletarian-socialist mass action, and individual anarchistic direct action. One shot signified the end of a social order, the other... not much of anything.

I am surprised that the ship has been preserved intact till now considering it was under commission till 1957.

It was in service as a monument while commissioned, then decommissioned as the a museum-ship in 1957, it wasn't actively used after world war II. But it was sunk in 1941 by German artillery and raised in the post war and restored to it's 1917 state for historical purposes, that is why it is still in such good shape. It was also restored later in the 80s.

Seriously though, there is something quite problematic about video and graphics etc these days. I virtually immediately thought after the shot of the gun actually firing, well that could be artificial (with all the rest of the video being genuine). In this instance it's not that important but the wider implications for manipulation of events and so on is seemingly getting a little worrying. The ruling class don't seem to be using it that much yet, I'm thinking of the Iraq square Saddam statue 'demo', Chavez attempted coup etc but perhaps it will be in the future?

Perhaps they don't even need it, they seemingly went to war in Libya on scare stories.

However, with increasing technology and bourgeois propaganda it is going to make it increasingly difficult to know what is and is not actually occurring let alone why.
Down with the Mao Tse-tung/Pepsi Cola/Billy Graham axis!

You're aware that the anarchists of that time were contrasted to the Bolsheviks to a significant extent because of their preoccupation with mass action over the enlightened politicking of the Party, aren't you?

For those wondering, it is indeed a tourist trap today. Well preserved, you can walk up on its decks, take photos, etc. etc. Additionally, nightly river cruises take their boats right up along side it for a closer look.

It looked fully functional to me when I was there; I'd say it isn't CGI but a legit stunt. Kudos to those who pulled it off and thanks for sharing
