Freaking amazing! President Obama, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate, has ordered 100 US soldiers to go to Uganda, to act as "advisers." They will "advise" in connection with military action against the "Lord's Resistance Army." Apparently, the continuing US occupation of Iraq and the endless US war in Afghanistan are not enough.
This is how it began in Viet Nam: President Kennedy sent in "advisers," and then President Johnson, "LBJ," sent in the Marines, and, lo and behold, we were at war for a decade, 1965 - 1975, killing vast numbers of Vietnamese, in an assault on one of the poorest nations on earth, by the then-richest nation, us.
Our rulers simply never learn: speaking about military intervention, some time ago, Obama himself admitted that the US government is broke, but facts do not deter them. Even Bill Clinton, a big fan of US military intervention, who, like Obama, never served five minutes in uniform, did not send troops to Africa (though Clinton wanted to intervene in the Congo with US troops and was only dissuaded by African governing figures themselves).

Just so you're aware, there's already a thread on this:

"Socialist ideas become significant only to the extent that they become rooted in the working class."
"If there is no struggle, there is no progress. Those who profess to favor freedom and yet deprecate agitation are men who want crops without plowing up the ground. . .Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will."

Clinton still did what he could along the way, like drop some bombs on a factory in Sudan, among worse atrocities in other countries.
I saw millions of people working.
Not for themselves but for someone else.
I saw millions of people doing.
Not what they themselves want to do.
But what someone else wants them to do.

The US is facing a serious decline in its involvement in Africa, and they are desperate to regain a foothold which they used to have during most of the post-Cold War era. It isn't just Uganda, America is also setting up AFRICOM, and they've been pressuring the Mozambican government for the longest time to set up military coordination between the two states. An interesting note is that the few locals who are aware of this oppose it greatly, including numerous police officers I've spoken to about it (who surprisingly are very anti-imperialist).
America is in decline globally, and in Africa they have lost a lot of power to China.

Maskerade has it right, this is nothing more than a display of U.S. imperialism, pure and simple, and it is based on the reasons Maskerade outlined.
Also, there is an element to this deployment that every one should be made aware of; the continued assault on democratic rights by the imperial powers through Obama's continuation of the policy of extra-judicial execution of designated "terrorists" outside of the jurisdiction of any court of law. The execution of Anwar al-Awlaki in Yemen is one example.
I believe that this element is not coincidental to the crisis of global capitalism currently under way. These types of anti-democratic policies should be a warning shot to the working class of the world, as the stage is being set for the confrontation of the working class with the interests of capital.
There is a good article on the World Socialist Website today that deals with the U.S. troop deployment to Uganda. Sorry there is no link, I cannot post it because I am still new here.
Thanks!
The LRA is very weak and hated. This won't last too long.
We're all disillusioned with capitalism.
Wasn't the Ugandan government just about to start openly executing homosexuals before there was a bunch of international outcry, and don't they still imprison people just for their sexuality? And this is supposed to be about "fighting evil human rights abusers" ? Give me a break.
