I'm going to go ahead and say this. Its kind of scary to hear a leader talk like this. It sounds a little quasi fascist.
“How in the hell could a man enjoy being awakened at 6:30 a.m. by an alarm clock, leap out of bed, dress, force-feed, shit, piss, brush teeth and hair, and fight traffic to get to a place where essentially you made lots of money for somebody else and were asked to be grateful for the opportunity to do so?” Charles Bukowski, Factotum
"In our glorious fight for civil rights, we must guard against being fooled by false slogans, as 'right-to-work.' It provides no 'rights' and no 'works.' Its purpose is to destroy labor unions and the freedom of collective bargaining... We demand this fraud be stopped." MLK

Why "quasi-fascist"?
His goal is to sell as much gas and oil as possible to anyone willing to pay for it.
Given Russia`s status of a peripheral capitalist economy and its complete reliance on energy exports to sustain itself, should an economic collapse occur in the first world capitalist states, the consequences Russia would be facing would be far more severe than in the US or EU. A failed state or a fascist dictatorship of some sort wouldn`t be out of the question. Where people get all these ideas about "resurgent Russia" is beyond me.
So I had a rather lengthy response typed out but my computer decided to shut down on me.
So I'll just repeat what I said (with fewer words):
This move largely reflects Russia's comfort in pursuing its own economic and geopolitical goals. It isn't a puppet of the West by any means, and in fact has been resurgent politically, economically, and socially in the FSU for roughly 8-9 years now. Its esentially overseen the establishment of a broad sphere of interest, one which spans from Belarus to Tajikistan. The only states still openly hostile towards Russia's moves in the region are Georgia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and much of Central Europe, but these countries aren't in a position to really resist. They have to look to an outside power, and right now the U.S. is more than happy to play the part. Russia's resurgence throughout its near-abroad is an historically natural one, except in this case the goal isn't empire - it's domination through political, military, and economic means without the hassle of empire. Ultimately, this reflects some of the interests of the financial-political elite and the state/system which drives them forward. Attaining as much influence as possible and cementing it is Russia's goal; so far its succeeded.

"Socialist ideas become significant only to the extent that they become rooted in the working class."
"If there is no struggle, there is no progress. Those who profess to favor freedom and yet deprecate agitation are men who want crops without plowing up the ground. . .Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will."

What RedScare1917 is saying...
I can't wait for the world to have 3 big empires competing with one another. That always works out well.
