Didn't UC Berkeley do something else like this for the SETI program? I seem to recall my brother installing something on our machine ages ago (when I was still living with the 'rents) that would help them process data from radio telescopes.

Dear fellow leftists!
Do you know what BOINC is? Taken from the wikipedia: "The Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing (BOINC) is an open source middleware system for volunteer and grid computing. The intent of BOINC is to make it possible for researchers to tap into the enormous processing power of personal computers around the world."
Basically, with BOINC you can help scientists around the world in areas like mathematics (searching for primes, proving conjectures,...), physics (searching for gravitational waves, pulzars (spinning neutron stars), stars, planets, black holes, alliens, ....), medicine (participating in the research of the HIV virus, development of medicines,...) etc.
So where is the link with communism? Everywhere! Some months ago one of my friends said that communism is conservative... I was pissed at the start, but then I got the idea: many educated people think that way. How can I fight this? By showing them that we communists stand for the development of humankind, science and everything else.
My way of thinking about this matter is such: if we as a communist team reach a high position, then some people will think about it and we will have the opurtinity to show them, what we really stand for. The shock for the majority can be even greater because they think that our areas of interest are only limited to politics.
And so I created "The Communist" team in all BOINC projects (a BOINC-wide team). But unfortunately, currently we have only 4 members. My recruitment program on FB was unsuccessful. Majority of those interested think that this is reserved only for the "geeks", but no, things are well documented and easy to set and maintain. Myself, I cannot change anything, no matter how hard I push my computer. I desperately need more members and I do not know where to get them.
Can you help me?

I may just do it, once i get an area where i can put up my computer which i keep linux on.
Also what sort of bandwidth consumption would be expected?
Maybe party uniforms would be an idea. When the Party marches into a town, it should look like a military occupation is on the way.

praxis1966, [email protected] is still online. It is one out of 7 projects we are currently participating in. Other projects are [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], malariacontrol.net, Collatz conjecture and [email protected] Give it a try once more!
StoneFrog, do not worry. Majority of BOINC projects has a very low bandwidth consumption. You can even use a dial-up. You can set it to connect every n hours/days, you can limit it on how many KBs it can send/receive per day and so forth. Majority of WUs (work units) is very small (some KBs or even bytes).
The only exception I think of at the moment is [email protected], which has very large WUs. For example, Binary Radio Pulsar Search can download 5 or more 4MB files per WU. When I download say 50 WUs I normally leave it for some hours to download everything (basic ADSL connection).
But all other projects I participate in have very small WUs so the bandwith should not be a problem even on dial-up.

That's pretty cool it's still operational. IIRC, it was well over a decade ago when he installed the thing.
I can attest to this. Again, IIRC, if my bro installed it when I'm thinking he did, we were barely Pentium class at the time with a 56K fax/modem. I don't remember any noticeable slow down in processing time either.

I was crunching years ago, also for SETI (both the classic and the boinc clients) and [email protected] (which doesn't seem to exist anymore). My laptop isn't a super fast machine, but all bits help.

Many scientific projects require a lot of computational power. The classic solution for this is to have huge (and very expensive) supercomputers. However, it is much cheaper to divide the data into small blocks that more simple computers (like desktop pc's, laptops, etc) can handle. The idea is that a million simple computers can do the job of a few super computers.
The (as far as I know) first project utilising this idea was the SETI (Search for Extra-Terrestial Intelligence) project, which searches for alien civilisations by scanning the sky for artificial radio signals. Back in the 1990's the funding for the project was being slashed, so scientists had to look for innovative ways to process their vast amounts of data. [email protected] was the result.
BOINC is the next generation of this idea. BOINC is a platform on which many different projects can participate, ranging from cryptography and other mathematical problems, to protein and enzyme folding (medical research), to astronomy and much else. Se this page for a full lists of projects.
BOINC only uses the idle time of a CPU or, more recently, your GPU (video card processor), meaning you shouldn't notice it being run at all as it only uses the resources you wouldn't be using anyway.

Anyway, I think that we (members of this team) need a forum where we can help each other (like a team webpage, where parts of forum will be private and parts public) and chat about our computing. I already have some stories regarding BOINC to tell
BOINC provides forums, but for us only per-project forums are usable (since no one is a member of our BOINC wide team. Perhaps we could use something like free forums?
