For the past couple years I've had severe insomnia and because those bastard doctors wont perscribe me anything I've resorted to using non-perscription sleep meds (like unisom) but for some reason the reccomended dosage doesn't even give a threshold effect so I've had to increase it. Does anyone here know if this is dangerous?

I would have thought that using drugs of any sort was dangerous, and using too many of them is too dangerous.

If I were you I would try out all the other alternatives to drugs (such as music, lots of physical activity etc), before resorting to drugs. That way you can go to your doctor and say, "I've tried this that and the other and it doesn't work, can you suggest anthing?"
I have recently read an artical about how Americans (as in US citizens) use far too many drugs for a variety of purposes.

Don't use drugs to "help" you sleep! You might as well not sleep at all. They don't put you into a proper sleep, making them useless.

And besides, they also tamper with your brainwaves.

Doxylamine Succinate is an anti-histamine - and the active ingredient in that crap you are taking. Anti-histamines are almost useless for falling asleep in my oppinion - unless you are talking benedryl or something extra drowsy like that.

It's generally not a good idea to take too much of an anti-histamine - if you cross the threshhold you can end up with dissociation and extreme delerium (i.e. talking to people that are not there and thinking you are a species of Central American lizard). That would also cause quite a bit of liver damage and other nastiness.

However - we are talking pretty huge doses for that to happen. How much do you take?

If I were you I'd stop taking that stuff alltogether - it is mostly good for allergies and for alleviating symptoms of opiate abuse - it's ability to induce sleepiness are limited at best.

Like 300 mg and I'm hardly getting any affect so I'll probably stop. Any reccomendations for anything else? Weed helped a bit but the weed down here is shit and is hard to find anyways.

Edit: apathy maybe: I've had this for about six or seven years and I've tried every natural or homeopathic alternative I've heard of and tried every suggestion regarding music and exsercise and nothing works so this is a last resort.

The problem with sleep aids is that they are naturally addictive - I have not heard of anything that helps you sleep that doesn't also make you need it to get normal sleep the next night.

That being said - if it is seriously interfering with your life and you are not addicted to anything else and don't have a history of addiction - you might want to ask your doctor about "Stilnoct". It knocks most people the fuck out at a normal dose - but definitely DO NOT rely on it every night. It should be an emergency measure.

Other than that - I can't recommend anything you haven't been told before - I am in the same boat actually. I have had insomnia for nearly a decade and tried it all. The past few years I just smoke weed before bed - it works but it doesn't give you a very restful sleep and of course it is not a good idea to use a drug every day.

Best of luck,

yeah, I agree with pretty much all of this advice, you must remember what nietsche said: "A little poison now and then: that maketh pleasant dreams. And much poison at last for a pleasant death" You gotta watch that stuff.

Say, have you tried reading some of the philosophy forums for sleep aid? Of course, none of the forums I have posted in....

Did you ever think about not sleeping at all? Why the hell would you want to sleep anyway? You're not putting yourself to any use.

Stay up for as long as you want to. Don't bother trying to sleep at night. Stay awake. Eventually, you'll end up nodding off.

You have obviously never experienced sleep deprivation - it is impossible to live your life that way.

Well, at the end, I did say that he would eventually nod off into "the land of dreams"... At least he would get some decent sleep that way, once in a while.

As for my serious suggestions concerning sleep, they seem to be ignored all over the board:

1. Record your own snoring one night on a cassette or CD. the next night, play it, and it will make you fall asleep. It won't work with anyone else's snoring, however.

2. Read.

3. Listen to music without lyrics.
