It just shows the need to branch out in our energy supply and not rely so heavily on oil. But of course global corporations do not want to hear any of this "oil peak" rhetoric for the running out of its supply is a blow to the profits of such businesses.
As soon as the oil supply does get low, I think you'll see a lot more government action in foreign nations to retrieve oil under the guise of "national interests." So yeah, I do think that the oil peak will provoke a whole bunch of imperialistc ventures.

I think we've already seen the beginnings of this campaign. The only major reserves that have not reached or will not soon reach their peak are in the Caspian Sea and Iraq. Alaska is another desperation, but there's really very little oil there.
Read the neocon manifesto, project for a new american century. It talks specifically about oil, building a pipeline from the Caspian Sea, through Afghanistan and out to the Indian Ocean where it can be shipped.
even the oil companies are expecting us to run out in 40-45 years. and this figure doesn't take into account the rapid industralization of china or india.
undoutably oil will be a cause of conflict in the coming years. note to that it is the us army that is the worlds largest user of oil -oil is essential to americain dominace.
