Should we save migratory shore birds in NJ?

there is a big problem with this in NJ...horseshoe crabs lay there eggs in the BILLIONS on NJ shores, and this is essential fuels for shorebirds, like red knots, migrating from canada down south...however, there is a big industry in culling these horseshoe crabs

if we stop the hunt, average workers who often work their own boats, not memebers of large corporations will be severely hurt...what should we do?

i believe we should save the birds and fuck those fishers...but tha's just my opinion...however i am a proponent of hunting

Possibly some sort of controlled or licensed harvesting of the crabs?

well, this is a perfect example of individual's rights and aspirations interfering directly with their environment. Something at the core of Animal Rights and Environmental Studies. That being said, I have a clue as to what should happen, but no definate or plausible. I would, from where I'm sitting right now, say protect the shorebirds at the expence of the workers.

I agree, we can always give the workers new jobs, but we can't give the birds a new life. Once they're gone they're gone.

So save the birds and give the fishers welfare or something.

because Israel supports the oppression of the palestinians. anyways back to the subject. isnt there enough horseshoe crabs as you said there are billions of them on the shore, so shouldnt the fishermen be able to harvest what they need and then the birds get the rest? plus these birds make a long long journey from canada to the south im sure there are thousands of places for them to catch a meal on the way.

not quite...but anyway...research has shown that the southern NJ shores are a key refueling stop for many of these birds, and with the heavy fishing in the area, there numbers have been declining steadily

Again, I think humans should try to interfere as little as possible with natural processes and ecology, and those fishermen should reduce their activity in that area until the birds and the crabs can maintain a natural balance.
