Actually...Christianity itself is not capitalist. Capitalism itself did not exist as an economic structure back then and Christianity is not an economic doctrine nor a political one. What it is is a social construct to gain power. It teaches a way to live, behave and go around in society by worshiping a specific deity and should be understood as such.

Since the church and the religion itself seek approval and coexistence within society and want to gain power and influence over it they have to respect the political hierarchy and dominate it as much as it needs to respect the other groups within society and influence and dominate them. And that is what it teaches.

The Bible, if read carefully, is a book which contains something for everybody as long as you want and hope to read it in there. If read more carefully its a horrible contradictionary work....simply because it tries to placate everybody...and in doing so justifies, for example, both feudal rule and rejects it.

The one constant of the Bible is that the religion and church are the supreme authority on God and religion. This means that you can openly criticise, attack and wage war on just about everybody as long as they do not adopt and follow the true church.

How to interpret the Bible has been a source of dispute even within the Catholic church. For everybody familiar with Eco's work: The Name of the Rose (fuck the movie...read the freaking book) the dispute over if Jesus was poor or rich has been the source of much conflict and prosecution between the Fransiscans and Dominicans (with the last group winning the dispute saying Jesus was wealthy...incidentally the dominicans were always set on gaining property and wealth...so that gives you an idea into the motives there ;-) )

The Church has worked itself up the chain of command throughout its history. Claiming infallibility because of its position as Porta Coeli (Gate to Heaven) and superior knowledge on all things God. In fact the Church had so much power that without its support you couldn't be ruler. So the Church hierarchy tried to subjegate the political hierarchy and the Political hierarchy tried to subjegate the Church. Which eventually lead to the Catholic Shiszm in which we had a Pope in Avignon and one in Rome. Two popes. you could choose ;-)

The status of infallability ended when Carolus V plundered and ransaked Rome after a dispute with the Pope. Even then, because everybody who ruled got their legitimacy from the Church, there was some nice political whitewashing going on with the Emperor claiming that though the Pope is infallable in matters of God ad Heaven, he is, as a worldly leader, merely human, and, just as him, able to make grave mistakes and could and should be punished for them. :-D There were even some Biblical verses used to justify the act....which illustrates how many directions you can go with one book.

Long story short....I can cite you verses which will make the Bible look like a blue print for revolution. I can cite you verses which can make the Bible look like a blue print for fascism...or whatever you like. Though the more obscure the more interpreting you will have to do.

The Apostles lived communally and had common ownership of the means of production, according to the Bible. Communism much?

Yep. My local Communist Party member is a Baptist. He's kind of awkward at meetings though... He justifies his socialism like Chavez does his Christianity.

Whether or not you agree with Noam Chomsky, 2:08-2:53 of this video is interesting. For the record, I am an atheist and I disagree with Chomsky's praise of Pope John XXIII.

There are countless examples of Millenialism within Christianity (Fiore's, Catharism, Puritanism, not to mention the alphabet soup of Milleniarinism leading up to & in the wake of the English revolution
O sun, I will stare into your eyes
Till the time comes when my vision
Is all dried up, is all dried up
Till my eyes are filled like craters
Full of ashes, just like craters
On the moon, beyond the universe, [...]
    Lost and lonely shooting star
    Shooting star all extinguished
Since time eternal, since time eternal
    Sentenced and condemned

Here's a hilarious video that answers the question: what if Jesus was a right wing conservative?

I think most people regardless of their religion support capitalism seeing as we live in a predominantly capitalist world...
